BMW and Mini cars add iOS integration for Audible, Glympse, Rhapsody and TuneIn

Glympse to offer incar location sharing, fewer excuses for BMW and Mini drivers

BMW hasn't been quite as aggressive in pushing smartphone app integration as American counterparts like Ford or GM, but it certainly knows how to make up for lost time: the Munich automaker just greenlit tie-ins with the iOS apps from Audible, Glympse, Rhapsody and TuneIn. Plug in a device and it will be possible to wield the apps' respective audiobook, location sharing, subscription music and live streaming radio services from a BMW Apps-capable BMW or Mini, with an interface optimized for the center stack. Each of the developers will need to update their app to make everything click, which we're told may take weeks. There still shouldn't be much wait before fans of Teutonic (and British) rides can get lost while streaming favorite songs -- and tell everyone just how far they went off-course.

Hollande's popularity at new low as he grapples with French economy: poll

PARIS (Reuters) - French President Francois Hollande's popularity rating has fallen to its lowest level since he came to power, a poll found on Wednesday, a day before he is due to address the nation to ask for patience as he attempts to revive the economy.

Ten months into his tenure, the Socialist president is struggling to reverse rising jobless claims, which are at their highest level in 15 years, and to stimulate an economy teetering near recession.

Only 27 percent of those polled in the LH2 poll for left-leaning weekly Le Nouvel Observateur expressed satisfaction with Hollande, with 68 percent dissatisfied.

Hollande was elected last May on pledges to get people back to work. His inability to meet that goal and a steady stream of weak economic data has eroded his popularity, which fell to about 30 percent late last month, according to various polls.

In the LH2 survey, just 15 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with his efforts to fight unemployment, with 81 percent dissatisfied. His efforts to reduce the public debt fared only slightly better, garnering a 22 percent satisfaction rate.

"This assessment ... shows that his May 2012 designation as a 'candidate of change' now leaves people with a feeling they have been deceived, which is amplified for his measures to fight unemployment and reduce the public debt," said pollster LH2.

Only in Hollande's management of foreign relations did those polled express more satisfaction than dissatisfaction - 47 percent against 45 percent.

Hollande is due to give a prime-time television interview on Thursday aimed at reassuring a skeptical public over the economic outlook.

The survey questioned 968 people by telephone on March 22 and 23.

Hey Look We Found Tatooine In Real Life

French astronomers think they found Tatooine in real life and we didn't even have to travel to a galaxy far, far away (well, it's still kind of far). The fictional home of Luke Skywalker is called 2MASS0103(AB)b in real life and it revolves around two suns that move relatively close together. Restrictive Medicaid eligibility criteria associated with higher rates of delayed medical care

Boston Effective health screening and preventive care is known to reduce health care costs and improve health outcomes, yet new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) shows that restrictive Medicaid policies are associated with patients delaying needed medical care due to cost. States and counties with the most restrictive Medicaid eligibility criteria (where individuals must be far below the federal poverty level to qualify for Medicaid) have the highest rates of delayed care. This research appears in the March 28, 2013 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"The causes of delaying care are complex. States with restrictive Medicaid policies need to review their strategies for improving access to care," said Cheryl Clark, MD, ScD, a co-author of the research and the director of Health Equity Research and Intervention in the Center for Community Health and Health Equity at BWH.

Specifically, the research found:

  • States with the most restrictive Medicaid eligibility requirements have higher rates of patients delaying needed medical care.
  • Regions with the highest rates of delayed medical care are in the southeast, specifically Florida and Texas.
  • Across the United States, Hispanics are at a higher risk for delaying needed medical care.
  • Patients are less likely to delay needed medical care in regions with a greater concentration of primary care providers, such as New England.

"Solving this problem will take more than just a Medicaid expansion," said Jennifer Haas, MD, MSPH, a co-author of the research and a primary care physician at BWH. "The states and counties that have been successful in reducing their rates of delayed care have been able to increase the number of primary care physicians, reduce eligibility barriers for Hispanic patients and generally increase access to health care."

How Old is Your Primary Computer?

How Old is Your Primary Computer? In the past, you had to upgrade your computer almost every year just to keep up with advancements in basic software and operating systems. Upgrading regularly just isn't so necessary any more, unless you're playing modern games or using specific types of resource-hungry applications. How old is your system?

Having an older computer is really nothing to be ashamed of. If it does what you need it to do, who really cares if you bought it back when smart phones were still a new thing? We've even shown you 10 ways you can make the best of an old, crappy computer. But for now, we'd like to know how old your computer is?not the oldest computer you may have sitting around somewhere, but the computer you use every day.

(AP) ? Tiger Woods has been winning at Bay Hill before he was old enough to drive a car.

"It all started there," Woods said Wednesday on the eve of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he is the defending champion, a seven-time champion and has a chance to return to No. 1 in the world if he can win for an eighth time.

He already has won eight times at Bay Hill if the 1991 U.S. Junior Amateur counted. Woods wound up winning against Brad Zwetschke on the first extra hole. He remembered just about all the details, except that his opponent missed a short bogey putt at the end.

Much more clear in his mind was meeting Palmer.

"He was handing out some medals to guys that have played in three Juniors, and there are only a handful of guys that had done that," Woods said. "He was giving those guys medals and I said, 'I'd like to one day play in as many Juniors as that.'"

And he did, winning the next two U.S. Junior Amateurs, and then running off three straight U.S. Amateur titles, and then joining the PGA Tour and taking it from there.

Woods returned to Bay Hill in 1994 and missed the cut, yet even that had a peculiar piece of history involved ? it was his first 80 on the PGA Tour. He later moved a few miles down the road to Isleworth, and once joined Palmer in one of his games at Bay Hill.

"Unfortunately, lost money to him, too," Woods said.

And if that's not enough, both of Woods' children were born at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies.

"So this place, and this tournament, has a very special place in my heart," he said.

Woods hopes to rekindle some more memories Thursday when the Arnold Palmer Invitational gets under way. It's his last tournament before the Masters, and even if Woods doesn't win this week to return to No. in the world, he already is looked upon as the favorite at Augusta National. He is the only multiple winner on the PGA Tour this year, with victories at Torrey Pines and Doral, both times building big margins on the back nine.

And his peers are paying attention.

"The one thing I don't think you give Tiger enough credit for is every time I see him tee it up, he hits it on the center of the bat ? hits it solidly all the time," said Brandt Snedeker, who has done his viewing on television after sitting out the last five weeks with a rib injury. "That is a very underrated quality. Not very many guys do that. When guys have an off week, they tend to mishit it. When Tiger has an off week, it's not like that."

Graeme McDowell saw it on the weekend at Doral, where he did his best to make up a deficit and Woods always had an answer, winning by two shots. McDowell also saw it a year ago at Bay Hill in fast, firm conditions that made it feel like Sunday at the U.S. Open. Woods closed with a 70 and won by five.

"I think as difficult as this golf course played last year on Sunday afternoon, I watched the Tiger Woods that's won 14 major championships," McDowell said. "I watched a display of discipline. Conservative at times, but firing away from pins. When the golf course gets tougher, the guy is able to slip into a gear where he plays aggressive golf to conservative targets.

"When he's playing well, he's hard to beat. Especially when the golf course is as difficult as this one was last year on Sunday afternoon."

Woods sank to as low as No. 58 in November 2011 before making a gradual return toward the top, getting a power boost last year by winning three times. He went to the PGA Championship with a chance to reach No. 1 by winning, but then he failed to convert a 36-hole share of the lead. Rory McIlroy won at Kiawah Island, and with three more wins the rest of the way, the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland appeared to be entrenched at No. 1 for some time.

As McIlroy has struggled this year, Woods has been charging.

Whether it happens this week is of little consequence to Woods. He has long said that winning takes care of everything, especially the No. 1 ranking. He's in no rush. But he is proud of his climb back to at least be in this position.

"We're still getting better," Woods said. "Things are still becoming more efficient. These two wins I've had this year, I've built myself some nice leads, which means that I've played really well, and things are starting to come around and become more efficient day in and day out."

Woods never used to think about No. 1 because he was there for so long, most of the time by such a large margin.

What these last few years have taught him was the importance of good health. Woods missed his first major after winning the 2008 U.S. Open because of reconstructive knee surgery. That ended his streak of 46 consecutive majors, and ended his hope of a record Woods believes will never be broken ? Jack Nicklaus competed in 146 consecutive majors from the 1962 Masters through the 1998 U.S. Open.

"That's crazy, isn't it?" Woods said. "Playing 146 tour events is pretty good."

The Nicklaus record he really wants is 18 professional majors, and Woods will have to wait three weeks for the Masters to see if he can make up ground. Palmer hasn't ruled him out just yet.

"I think right now looking at him and watching him play, as I have recently, he looks probably as strong and as good from a golf perspective as I've ever seen him," Palmer said. "I think his swing and his posture and his attitude is far better than it's been in some time. ... I give him a chance to do the record. I suppose that every year it's a little more fleeting, however, and he'll have to really work hard to keep himself up and keep his mental attitude if he's going to do it."

Microsoft execs' Xbox Live accounts hacked, investigation still underway

Microsoft execs' Xbox Live accounts hacked, investigation still underway

Microsoft has just confirmed that a group of hackers have indeed accessed the Xbox Live accounts of several of its past and present "high-profile" employees. News of the breach was first reported by Ars Technica, which itself had been the victim of a DoS attack this last weekend, potentially linked to the same group. Evidence pointing to hacking collective Team Hype's alleged involvement surfaced when videos depicting its efforts were found online; videos that demonstrated the group's reported use of illegally obtained Social Security data to gain access to and sell off Xbox Live user accounts. According to Microsoft's recently issued statement, the company's working with authorities to "disable this current method" and cut off the possibility of future attacks. For now, it appears this security compromise is unrelated to a UK incident which saw Microsoft's Xbox Entertainment Award voting app temporarily expose user data. We'll update you as soon as we hear more.

Neanderthal brains focused on vision and movement leaving less room for social networking

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Neanderthal brains were adapted to allow them to see better and maintain larger bodies, according to new research by the University of Oxford and the Natural History Museum, London.

Although Neanderthals' brains were similar in size to their contemporary modern human counterparts, fresh analysis of fossil data suggests that their brain structure was rather different. Results imply that larger areas of the Neanderthal brain, compared to the modern human brain, were given over to vision and movement and this left less room for the higher level thinking required to form large social groups.

The analysis was conducted by Eiluned Pearce and Professor Robin Dunbar at the University of Oxford and Professor Chris Stringer at the Natural History Museum, London, and is published in the online version of the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Looking at data from 27,000-75,000-year-old fossils, mostly from Europe and the Near East, they compared the skulls of 32 anatomically modern humans and 13 Neanderthals to examine brain size and organisation. In a subset of these fossils, they found that Neanderthals had significantly larger eye sockets, and therefore eyes, than modern humans.

The researchers calculated the standard size of fossil brains for body mass and visual processing requirements. Once the differences in body and visual system size are taken into account, the researchers were able to compare how much of the brain was left over for other cognitive functions.

Previous research by the Oxford scientists shows that modern humans living at higher latitudes evolved bigger vision areas in the brain to cope with the low light levels. This latest study builds on that research, suggesting that Neanderthals probably had larger eyes than contemporary humans because they evolved in Europe, whereas contemporary humans had only recently emerged from lower latitude Africa.

'Since Neanderthals evolved at higher latitudes and also have bigger bodies than modern humans, more of the Neanderthal brain would have been dedicated to vision and body control, leaving less brain to deal with other functions like social networking,' explains lead author Eiluned Pearce from the Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Oxford.

'Smaller social groups might have made Neanderthals less able to cope with the difficulties of their harsh Eurasian environments because they would have had fewer friends to help them out in times of need. Overall, differences in brain organisation and social cognition may go a long way towards explaining why Neanderthals went extinct whereas modern humans survived.'

'The large brains of Neanderthals have been a source of debate from the time of the first fossil discoveries of this group, but getting any real idea of the "quality" of their brains has been very problematic,' says Professor Chris Stringer, Research Leader in Human Origins at the Natural History Museum and co-author on the paper. 'Hence discussion has centred on their material culture and supposed way of life as indirect signs of the level of complexity of their brains in comparison with ours.

'Our study provides a more direct approach by estimating how much of their brain was allocated to cognitive functions, including the regulation of social group size; a smaller size for the latter would have had implications for their level of social complexity and their ability to create, conserve and build on innovations.'

Professor Robin Dunbar observes: 'Having less brain available to manage the social world has profound implications for the Neanderthals' ability to maintain extended trading networks, and are likely also to have resulted in less well developed material culture -- which, between them, may have left them more exposed than modern humans when facing the ecological challenges of the Ice Ages.'

The relationship between absolute brain size and higher cognitive abilities has long been controversial, and this new study could explain why Neanderthal culture appears less developed than that of early modern humans, for example in relation to symbolism, ornamentation and art.

U.S. contractor charged with passing nuclear secrets to Chinese woman

By Tim Gaynor

(Reuters) - A U.S. defense contractor in Hawaii has been arrested on charges of passing national defense secrets, including classified information about nuclear weapons, to a Chinese woman with whom he was romantically involved, authorities said on Monday.

Benjamin Pierce Bishop, 59, a former U.S. Army officer who works as a civilian employee of a defense contractor at U.S. Pacific Command in Oahu was arrested on Friday and made his first appearance in federal court on Monday, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Hawaii said in a news release.

He is charged with one count of willfully communicating national defense information to a person not entitled to receive it, and one count of unlawfully retaining documents related to national defense. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, asked about the case at a daily news briefing in Beijing, said he did "not understand the relevant situation", and declined further comment.

China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, have long engaged in spying against each other.

Last year China arrested a Chinese state security official on suspicion of spying for the United States, sources said, a case both countries had kept quiet for several months as they strove to prevent a fresh crisis in relations.

That incident ranked as the most serious Sino-U.S. spying incident to be made public since 1985 when Yu Qiangsheng, an intelligence official, defected to the United States.

Yu told the Americans that a retired CIA analyst had been spying for China. The analyst killed himself in 1986 in a U.S. prison cell, days before he was due to be sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

"PERSON 1"

Bishop met the woman - a 27-year-old Chinese national identified as "Person 1" - in Hawaii during a conference on international military defense issues, according to the affidavit.

He had allegedly been involved in a romantic relationship since June 2011 with the woman, who was living in the United States on a visa, and had no security clearance.

From May of that year through December 2012, he allegedly passed national defense secrets to her on multiple occasions, including classified information about nuclear weapons and the planned deployment of U.S. strategic nuclear systems.

Other secrets included information on the United States' ability to detect foreign governments' low- and medium-range ballistic missiles, as well as information on the deployment of U.S. early warning radar systems in the Pacific Rim.

Bishop had top secret security clearance since July 2002. A court-authorized search of his home in November found around a dozen individual documents each with classification markings at the secret level, the affidavit said.

The case is being investigated by the FBI's Honolulu Division and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in coordination with U.S. Pacific Command and the U.S. Army.

I could still recall the days of writing telegrams. That was before the fax machine, internet and email. Writing a telegram meant economy of words and so obvious verbs and needless adjectives had to be omitted.

Today, with the advent of email and other cheap sources of communication you don?t have to be that paranoid about your message-except you are writing an advertisement. When writing a classified ad for example, every word must count in the small space allowed and so word choice becomes very important.

But word choice is not only about being brief.

Even when crafting a long sales letter you should try and avoid using the personal pronouns: ?we, me, I, our,us?. The sales message should be about your prospects and not about your company. The ?we syndrome? is a common error but it can easily be avoided. A sales message should state upfront the benefit to the customer not parade how many awards the company has received in the past ten years. Whenever possible then the copy should be written in the third person.

There are some other words that are very common in advertising but are just too vague to have any force. Great copy is always specific. ?How to make $3,567.23 from your home in 30 days!? has more force than ?How to make money from home.? Here are some commonly used words that lack force because their meaning is too ethereal:

It ? State what ?it? is rather than leave ?it? for the reader to figure out. This word can often be replaced by what ?it? represents or stands in place of.

Quality ? This has a similar meaning to ?personality?. We often hear people say that someone has personality. But everyone has a personality whether good or bad. The same holds for quality. Every product or service has some quality which the customer will be the ultimate judge of.

Superlatives such as ?tastiest, best, fastest, strongest, superior, minimize, optimize?. The problem with these words is that they instill doubt in the readers because these claims appear unsubstantiated. These words lack power because they are not measurable. Take the word ?superior? for example. What criterion or measurement was used to judge this product as superior and by how much?

Solutions ? This word cannot stand on its own. If you are selling a product or service it is also obvious that you are selling the solution to a problem, so state what the solution is rather than just using the word.

Technology ? This word is commonly used to suggest innovation and newness. But customers have little concern about the technology that is behind the products they buy. They are only concerned about the benefit they derive from these products and services. How many drivers are really concerned about the technology that?s under the hoods of the vehicle they drive? They are really only concerned that the vehicle is reliable and gives them some social status.

Difference ? Rather than stating that you are different from your competitors state the difference instead. Just saying ?different? means little and is just filling space. The statement ?We make all the difference? doesn?t leave the prospect more educated than before reading your sales message.

Consider the following advertiser?s blurb:

?We make all the difference because of our superior quality and solutions we offer.?

It?s like junk food ? a lot of flavor but zero nutritional value. This statement means little because it?s not specific at all. It creates more questions than answers and leaves the reader totally confused. And this is the last thing you want to do to a customer.

Go to any website and you?ll see statements such as ?can save you time and money?, (well how much?) ?creates website in less time? (less than 2, 4, 100 hours?), ?maximize your gas mileage? (by how much 1%, 5%, 40%?). All these statements will triple their effectiveness by using numbers (note that I gave a quantity, ?triple?).

The more specific your message is the more believable you will appear. Using a bunch of superlatives only makes you seem self-serving. Customers are immune to this type of hype and filters out these claims like a squirrel discards peanut shells.

When making any comparison in your sales letter state the baseline, use numbers and give a time period whenever possible. In this way you don?t have to use superlatives because the numbers will speak for themselves. If you follow this simple rule your sales conversion rate will increase by 4.7% within 29 days of putting this into effect.

Even though that last statement was hypothetical you can sense its power because specific numbers were used instead of just saying ?your sales will increase?.

I think it?s time to review your sales message and sweep away the chaff words leaving the pure wheat behind.

You?ll be 9.9% happier that you did!

Syrian jets strike Lebanon border

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian air force jets fired four rockets at a remote section of the border with Lebanon on Monday, security sources said, four days after Damascus warned it may strike at Syrian rebels taking refuge across the frontier.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the air strike near the Bekaa Valley town of Arsal, whose Sunni Muslim residents mainly support Syrian rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanon has a policy of "dissociation" from the two-year civil war in Syria but officials say they feel their country is increasingly at risk of being dragged into a conflict that the United Nations says has killed 70,000 Syrians.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that a "large number" of militants had crossed Lebanon's northern border into the Syrian town of Tel Kalakh last week.

"Syria expects the Lebanese side to prevent these armed terrorist groups from using the borders as a crossing point, because they target Syrian people and are violating Syrian sovereignty," it said in a message to the Lebanese government, according to state media.

It said Syria's "patience is not unlimited", even though "Syrian forces have so far exercised restraint from striking at armed gangs inside Lebanese territory."

Animals From Ireland: Irish Setters, Galway Sheep And More Creatures To Celebrate On St. Patrick's Day

From Vetstreet's Laura Cross and Shayna Meliker:

As you don green getups and toast to St. Patrick, take a minute to think of all the wonderful gifts that the Emerald Isle has given us.

Its native species includes the good-natured Connemara pony and the easygoing Galway sheep. And don?t forget the gorgeous Irish dog breeds we now love on this side of the pond, from the Irish Setter to the Glen of Imaal Terrier.

Check out this gallery of our favorite Irish animals, and let us know which ones you're celebrating this St. Patrick's Day.

List and captions courtesy of Vetstreet

  • Irish Setter

You can spot this pretty canine a mile away, but did you know that the beautiful <a href="http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/irish-setter" target="_blank">Irish Setter </a>wasn't always a solid red dog? The earliest records of the breed (from about 400 years ago) refer to a red and white setting dog ? two colors that are easy for hunters to see in the field. By the time dog shows came along in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, solid red setters became the fashion.

  • Galway Sheep

Galway sheep have been grazing in the fields of western Ireland <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=cmOoReABq8kC&pg=PA46&dq=galway+sheep&hl=en&sa=X&ei=WYk_UdyfHOaBywGrsoH4DQ&ved=0CFMQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=galway%20sheep&f=false" target="_blank">since the late seventeenth century</a>. With their easygoing demeanor and long life span, these sheep are a great addition to any flock.

  • Common Lizard

St. Patrick might be celebrated for <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/03/090316-st-patricks-day-facts.html" target="_blank">casting all the snakes out of Ireland</a>, but he did leave one reptile behind ? the common lizard. While the scaly creature can be found throughout the U.K., the common lizard is the <a href="http://www.wildlifewatch.org.uk/explore-wildlife/animals/reptiles/common-lizard" target="_blank">only species of reptile that?s native to Ireland</a>.

  • Glen Of Imaal Terrier

The <a href="http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/glen-of-imaal-terrier" target="_blank">Glen of Imaal Terrier</a>'s name comes from an isolated valley in Ireland?s Wicklow Mountains, where the terrier originated. The dog's history begins in the 1570s, when Flemish mercenary soldiers came to the valley with their dogs, who eventually mated with the local Irish canines. If not for dog shows, the Glen of Imaal Terrier would still probably remain hidden in the remote mountains. It wasn?t until 1934 that the Irish Kennel Club finally recognized the breed. And we are so lucky that they did!

  • Irish Hare

The Irish hare may look like a tiny little thing, but he's accomplished some pretty impressive feats ? like surviving the most recent ice age. According to the <a href="http://www.hare-preservation-trust.co.uk/irish.html" target="_blank">Hare Preservation Trust</a>, the species took refuge in an ice-free, tundra-like landscape in southern Ireland. Nowadays, the russet brown-colored hare can be found in regions with tall plants and rich vegetation, which provide food and shelter that protect them from predators.

  • Connemara Pony

The Connemara pony is one of Ireland's equine gifts to the world. This is the largest of the pony breeds, standing at 12.2 to 14.2 hands high, according to the <a href="http://cpbs.ie/contents/page.php?v=10&u=breed-standards" target="_blank">Connemara Pony Breeders Society of Ireland</a>. They are known to be athletic animals with good-natured dispositions.

  • Irish Water Spaniel

The unusual-looking <a href="http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/irish-water-spaniel" target="_blank">Irish Water Spaniel</a> is covered with red curls everywhere besides his "rat tail" and his smooth face. His coat is naturally oily to repel water and keep the skin underneath dry, even after the hunting dog has been in the water. The dog who has the best claim to being the first modern Irish Water Spaniel was named Boatswain. He lived from 1834 to 1852, which was an incredibly long time for dogs back then!

  • Irish Moiled

This cow breed should be proud to be the only surviving domestic livestock native to Northern Ireland, according to the <a href="http://www.irishmoiledcattlesociety.com/" target="_blank">Irish Moiled Cattle Society</a>. It's a red, medium-sized, hornless breed that's marked by a white line on its back, plus red ears and a red nose. Its name is derived from the Gaelic word maol, which means "brow of a hill" ? referring to the cow's rounded head.

  • Kerry Bog Pony

The Kerry bog pony has quite an apt moniker ? the equine <a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=_98hwyRXZiYC&pg=PA20&dq=kerry+bog+pony&hl=en&sa=X&ei=n34_Uf3pB4igyAG3kYCADw&ved=0CFgQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=kerry%20bog%20pony&f=false" target="_blank">originates from the bogs of County Kerry</a> in Southwest Ireland. At a mere 10 to 12 hands, the small pony is a light-footed breed that?s known for its unique gait. According to the <a href="http://kerrybogpony.ie/contents/page.php?v=16&u=history-and-tourism" target="_blank">Kerry Bog Cooperative Society of Ireland</a>, the Kerry bogs were once known as hobbies because Gaelic-speaking locals used to call out ?<em>hup, hup</em>? as a way to call horses in from the farmyard.

  • Kerry Blue Terrier

Known for his striking blue coat, the <a href="http://www.vetstreet.com/dogs/kerry-blue-terrier" target="_blank">Kerry Blue Terrier</a> hails from Ireland?s County Kerry, where the breed was developed more than a century ago to do everything from herding sheep and cattle to hunting and retrieving small game and birds.

Has Your Law Firm Been Suckered in By SEO Myths? - WebShark360

When it comes to attorney marketing, SEO is one of the most effective tools to help your law firm gain new clients. SEO offers your law firm the ability to push your website to the top of the rankings in order to attract the attention of more consumers. But when it comes to obtaining SEO help, there are a lot of myths out there that unfortunately sucker in many law firms. The problem is that if your law firm falls for bad SEO promises, your attorney marketing could be suffering.

What your law firm doesn?t know could actually hurt it. If your law firm doesn?t know these common SEO myths, you could fall for a pitch by a less than reputable SEO company which will ultimately drive your law firm?s rankings down and cause your attorney marketing to land like a lead balloon. Worse, your attorney marketing could incur penalties from search engines because of shady SEO practices. In order to protect yourself, your law firm should be aware of and able to recognize the following SEO myths.

SEO Myths That Could Hurt Your Law Firm

There are hundreds, if not thousands of SEO firms that are constantly vying for the attention of business owners. Just do one Google search for SEO and you?ll find tons of SEO firms. But are you sure they have your best interests at heart? Do they know the strict guidelines attorneys have to operate in to avoid being penalized by the Bar? As attorney marketers, we are aware that your law firm needs to be acutely aware of how it presents itself to consumers. But many SEO companies do not understand nor take into account your unique attorney marketing guidelines. Before you take a call from some persuasive salesperson that tells you Google is holding a front page spot for your law firm (which doesn?t happen- it?s a lie) educate yourself on the SEO myths that could hurt your law firm:

? Only SEO matters. Many SEO practitioners will pitch law firms on the overwhelming need for SEO by telling you that the only thing that will matter in gaining new clients is SEO. While this isn?t true, it is a helpful tool of your attorney marketing. SEO can help your website shoot to the top of search engine rankings to appear to more consumers. But it won?t be present in the many offline areas where consumers read, view, or congregate. And SEO isn?t a knowledge leader that people trust to advocate your law firm over another. While SEO is important, your law firm needs to pursue a variety of attorney marketing tools to be successful. Only with a cohesive attorney marketing strategy can your law firm gain the variety of potential clients it needs to grow your firm.
? Social media doesn?t matter. Some SEO firms will actively tell clients that social media doesn?t work, that it doesn?t matter. The truth is, that if your SEO company is buying likes for your social media page, those aren?t real people that your content is reaching but fake bots. Fake likes don?t convert into paying clients. When your law firm pursues organic social media in conjunction with SEO, your firm is better able to not only attract higher rankings, but also to attract more clients organically. Social media is one of the tools that search engines are increasingly using to inform their algorithm of what consumers find valuable. The popularity of these networks increasingly helps to drive attorney marketing content higher in rankings, exposing law firms to more consumers.
? Page rank is the only thing that matters. SEO practitioners that don?t know anything about marketing in general like to say that page rank is the only thing that matters. At a recent conference, we had an SEO practitioner try to tell us that things like public relations, social media, and advertising all didn?t matter because page rank was the only thing that mattered. Page rank is important, but it isn?t the be all end all. If your law firm turns down press because the page rank isn?t as high as you?d like, you?re missing out on opportunities to expose your business to potential clients. If your law firm is deciding against advertising because the page rank isn?t high enough, you?re missing out on potential exposure to consumers. Page rank shouldn?t be the only measurement your law firm uses to guide your attorney marketing efforts.
? .Edu or .Gov sites are the best to target for SEO. Some SEO practitioners will tell you that you need to target .edu and .gov sites exclusively for coveted links to your law firm. However, the truth is that while some of these sites rank very well, others are obscure and not frequently visited by consumers. So essentially, links from these sites mean little. Instead, you should be targeting a variety of sites for back links, not just one style of domain.
? Links are better than content. Shady SEO companies like to say that back links are the only thing that matters, that they?re better than your attorney marketing content. But the reality is that if your law firm isn?t producing quality attorney marketing content, no amount of back links that you court will convert the traffic to your website into paying clients. With poor quality content, you could attract the traffic your website needs, but if that?s not translating into cases, then your law firm should seriously examine the quality of your attorney marketing content.
? SEO guarantees results. If an SEO practitioner tells you that they can guarantee results, they?re lying. If they try to pitch you on a search engine like Google holding a place for your law firm on the front page, they?re lying. The truth is, it?s hard work to propel your law firm?s website to the top of search engine rankings. If anyone promises this to your law firm, they?re charlatans at best. The truth is, any good SEO firm can promise you increased rankings and they can work hard to get you to the top of the rankings. But it?s not easy and it?s a daily struggle to compete with tons of people in your specific practice area.

There are literally dozens of SEO myths that many reputable law firms fall for on a regular basis. However, if your law firm falls for these obvious myths, you could be in trouble. Your attorney marketing needs a variety of tools to propel your sites to greater heights including SEO. And SEO results are not easily achieved. If you?re confused about SEO or your attorney marketing, call the team at WebShark360. We?ll help your law firm determine a strategy that propels your law firm to the top.

In interviews, new Pope Francis confirms commitment to poor

By Nicole Winfield,?The Associated Press / March 16, 2013

Pope Francis arrives for a series of questions from the media on Saturday, March 16. He discussed his reaction to being chosen pope as well as his feelings on charity.

Pope Francis offered intimate insights Saturday into the moments after his election, telling journalists that he was immediately inspired to take the name of St. Francis of Assisi because of his work for peace and the poor ? and that he himself would like to see "a poor church and a church for the poor."

"Let me tell you a story," Francis said in a break from his prepared text during a special gathering for thousands of journalists, media workers and guests in the Vatican's auditorium.

Francis then described how he was comforted by his friend, Brazilian Cardinal Claudio Hummes, as it appeared the voting was going his way and it seemed "a bit dangerous" that he would reach the two-thirds necessary to be elected.

RECOMMENDED:?How much do you know about the Catholic Church? Take our quiz!

When the threshold was reached, applause erupted in the frescoed Sistine Chapel.

"He (Hummes) hugged me. He kissed me. He said don't forget about the poor," Francis recalled. "And that's how in my heart came the name Francis of Assisi," who devoted his life to the poor, missionary outreach and caring for God's creation.

He said some have wondered whether his name was a reference to other Francis figures, including St. Frances de Sales or even the co-founder of the pope's Jesuit order, Francis Xavier.

But he said he was inspired immediately after the election when he thought about wars.

St. Francis of Assisi, the pope said, was "the man of the poor. The man of peace. The man who loved and cared for creation ? and in this moment we don't have such a great relationship with creation. The man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man."

"Oh how I would like a poor church and a church for the poor," Francis said, sighing.

He then joked that some other cardinals suggested other names: Hadrian VI, after a great church reformer ? a reference to the need for the pope to clean up the Vatican's messy bureaucracy. Someone else suggested Clement XV, to get even with Clement XIV, who suppressed the Jesuit order in 1773.

The gathering in the Vatican begins a busy week for the pontiff that includes his installation Mass on Tuesday.

Among the talks, the Vatican said Saturday, will be a session with the president of Francis' homeland Argentina on Monday. The pope has sharply criticized Christina Fernandez over her support for liberal measures such as gay marriage and free contraceptives.

But the most closely watched appointment will be Francis' journey next Saturday to the hills south of Rome at the papal retreat at Castel Gandolfo for lunch with Benedict XVI, a historic encounter that brings together the new pope and the first pope to resign in six centuries, which set in motion the stunning papal transition.

The Saturday meeting between the two will be private, but every comment and gesture on the sidelines will be scrutinized for hints of how the unprecedented relationship will take shape between the emeritus pontiff and his successor.

Introducing the Blog, Building Relationship Skills | World of ...

Introducing the Blog, Building Relationship SkillsRelationships are perhaps harder than people realize to build and keep going. The easy part is the beginning, when we?re just getting to know one another and everything is new.

Harder is a few years into it, and realizing that while the newness has worn off, we may not have all the skills necessary to keep the relationship good and growing.

That?s why I?m pleased to welcome two great relationship experts, Linda Bloom, LCSW and Charlie Bloom, MSW, and their blog, Building Relationship Skills. They?ve written two enlightening books on the subject, and teach workshops across the country about the skills needed to build great and enduring relationships.

As they say,

While everyone would like good relationships, the process of actually creating them is often more challenging than we expect it to be. Few of us have had good models or adequate education in regard to this subject.

Linda and Charlie offer the support and guidance needed to develop relationship skills along with the practices necessary to sustain and integrate them into our lives on a long-term basis.

Please give them a warm Psych Central welcome over at their new blog, Building Relationship Skills today!
