Myanmar cracks down on mine protest; dozens hurt

MONYWA, Myanmar (AP) ? Security forces used water cannons and other riot gear Thursday to clear protesters from a copper mine in in northwestern Myanmar, wounding villagers and Buddhist monks just hours before opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was to visit the area to hear their grievances.

The crackdown at the Letpadaung mine near the town of Monywa risks becoming a public relations and political fiasco for the reformist government of President Thein Sein, which has been touting its transition to democracy after almost five decades of repressive military rule.

The environmental and social damage allegedly produced by the mine has become a popular cause in activist circles, but was not yet a matter of broad public concern. But hurting monks ? as admired for their social activism as they are revered for their spiritual beliefs ? is sure to antagonize many ordinary people, especially as Suu Kyi's visit highlights the events.

"This is unacceptable," said Ottama Thara, a 25-year-old monk who was at the protest. "This kind of violence should not happen under a government that says it is committed to democratic reforms."

According to a nurse at a Monywa hospital, 27 monks and one other person were admitted with burns caused by some sort of projectile that released sparks or embers. Two of the monks with serious injuries were sent for treatment in Mandalay, Myanmar's second biggest city, a 2 ? hour drive away. Other evicted protesters gathered at a Buddhist temple about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the mine's gates.

Lending further sympathy to the protesters' cause is whom they are fighting against. The mining operation is a joint venture between a Chinese company and a holding company controlled by Myanmar's military. Most people remain suspicious of the military, while China is widely seen as having propped up army rule for years, in addition to being an aggressive investor exploiting the country's many natural resources.

Government officials had publicly stated that the protest risked scaring off foreign investment that is key to building the economy after decades of neglect.

State television had broadcast an announcement Tuesday night that ordered protesters to cease their occupation of the mine by midnight or face legal action. It said operations at the mine had been halted since Nov. 18, after protesters occupied the area.

Some villagers among a claimed 1,000 protesters left the six encampments they had at the mine after the order was issued. But others stayed through Wednesday, including about 100 monks.

Police moved in to disperse them early Thursday.

"Around 2:30 a.m. police announced they would give us five minutes to leave," said protester Aung Myint Htway, a peanut farmer whose face and body were covered with black patches of burned skin. He said police fired water cannons first and then shot what he and others called flare guns.

"They fired black balls that exploded into fire sparks. They shot about six times. People ran away and they followed us," he said, still writhing hours later from pain. "It's very hot."

Photos of the wounded monks showed they had sustained serious burns on parts of their bodies. It was unclear what sort of weapon caused them.

The protest is the latest major example of increased activism by citizens since the elected government took over last year. Political and economic liberalization under Thein Sein has won praise from Western governments, which have eased sanctions imposed on the previous military government because of its poor record on human and civil rights. However, the military still retains major influence over the government, and some critics fear that democratic gains could easily be rolled back.

In Myanmar's main city of Yangon, six anti-mine activists who staged a small protest were detained Monday and Tuesday, said one of their colleagues, who asked not to be identified because he did not want to attract attention from the authorities.

Colombia, FARC wrap up first round of peace talks

HAVANA (Reuters) - Colombia's Marxist-led FARC rebels said their peace talks with the government were going well, but the lead negotiator for President Juan Manuel Santos was more reserved as the two sides finished the first round of meetings aimed at ending their protracted conflict.

In separate sessions with the press, neither side spoke of breakthroughs in the talks, but nor was there any sign they had hit irresolvable obstacles as happened in previous peace attempts. They will reconvene in Havana on Wednesday.

The country's bloody guerrilla war, in which tens of thousands of people have died, dates back to 1964 when the FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, formed as a communist agrarian movement. It turned later to the illicit drug trade, kidnappings and extortion to sustain itself.

Millions of people have been displaced by the war, which the FARC says is a fight to end Colombia's long history of social inequality.

Dutch national Tanja Nijmeijer, a FARC negotiator, told reporters the talks "are going very well," with occasional moments of levity.

"The atmosphere during the talks is very good. There's even space for little jokes, for laughing," she said in response to a question.

Senior FARC leader Andres Paris said the negotiators mingled in the hallways during breaks and were getting to know each other.

"One doesn't know who is more surprised, them or us," said the mustachioed guerrilla. "When we sit at the table, they can observe not barbarians, not savages, but fighters, intellectuals, politicians, the sensible men and women."

Lead government negotiator Humberto de la Calle, who read a statement and took no questions, gave a more muted assessment, but indicated progress.

'MORE THAN SPEECHES'

"We have finished the first round of direct conversations. I can say ... we have advanced as expected," said de la Calle, wearing a black suit and white shirt, but no tie.

"We will not move conversations at the table to the microphones. More than speeches, we want concrete results," he said. "When there is relevant information, we will make it public in an opportune manner."

His comments were the first by the government negotiating team since the talks began on November 19, while the FARC members have spoken daily going into the meetings.

So far, they have held to an agreement not to discuss what is being said at the negotiating table. One of their topics has been Simon Trinidad, a former rebel leader they want released from a 60-year prison sentence in the United States so he can participate in the talks.

A photo of Trinidad, who is imprisoned for the kidnapping of three Americans in Colombia, loomed behind the rebels at their news conference.

Nijmeijer, who wore black clothes and a checked Palestinian scarf slung around her neck, read a FARC declaration of solidarity with the Palestinian people before going into Thursday's talks.

Previous attempts at peace ended in shambles, but a 10-year-long, U.S.-backed military offensive has weakened the FARC to the point the government believes the group may be ready for a negotiated end to the war.

The talks have begun with the complicated issue of rural development. Four equally thorny topics - ending the war, the political and legal future of the rebels, the drug trade and compensation for war victims - will follow.

Both sides said they wanted full citizen participation in the peace process, which Santos hopes to conclude in nine months.

They have opened an Internet site, www.mesadeconversaciones.com.co, for citizen input and will hold citizen forums.

Dolly Parton talks dreams, love, plastic surgery

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Although Dolly Parton has cemented her place in country and popular music, pop culture, and as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, she still, on occasion, gets nervous.

Her new book, "Dream More: Celebrate the Dreamer in You" encourages readers to overcome their fears, believe in their passions and keep taking risks.

The "I Will Always Love You" singer/songwriter, 66, who has written more than 3,000 songs and sold more than 100 million records, talked to Reuters about the message of the book, which was published this week.

Q. You say you put off writing this book?

A. "It's just a simple little book. It's not meant to save the world, or it's not a complete book of how to be successful, but I think there is enough stuff in it for people to see kinda how I conduct my business and kinda what my thoughts are. And the good part is that all the money, if it sells good, goes to Imagination Library."

Q. Right - your nonprofit quest to get kids to read?

A. "It's one of the reasons I wanted to write this too, because I usually do concerts every year, for the foundation to make money to afford a lot of books, but I am not on tour now."

Q. Talk about your 2009 commencement address at the University of Tennessee. Were you nervous?

A. "Well, yes, when I am out of my element doing things. I am not that educated and I didn't go that far in school and I thought, 'What am I going to say to these educated people, not just these kids who have just graduated college and are probably brilliant, but all these professionals and all these teachers?' And I thought, 'Oh, I am not smart enough', but I thought, 'Well, at least I am a hometown girl. At least they can see that in America, you can start from humble beginnings, that everybody can make it."

Q. Which is one of the book's messages, overcoming fears?

A. "Any time I am in a situation where I am just not comfortable, I am uneasy, but that doesn't mean I won't go on with it, just like the speech. And that I won't be good at it, but there are just some things I would prefer not to do!"

Q. Success doesn't equal happiness, yet you seem so hopeful and modest?

A. "I am always hopeful as a person, I have been since I was little...I really want things to be good. As I mention in the book, I wake up everyday expecting it to be good, and if it is not, then I try to set about changing it before I go to sleep at night."

Q. Would you describe yourself as religious or spiritual?

A. "Just spiritual, I am not religious. Although I grew up in a very religious family, but...I am no fanatic by any stretch of the word, and I am no angel, believe me. I wrote a song called 'The Seeker' many, many years ago, and it says 'I am a seeker, just a poor sinful creature, there is no one weaker than I am.'

"People say, 'What do you regret?' I say, 'I can't say that I regret anything because at the time I was doing it, whatever it was, it seemed to be the thing to be doing at the time.'

"I have a good friend base, I have a good husband. So I have a lot of things and people who help me and guide me. I have never had to go to a psychiatrist, but I would if I thought that I needed to.

Q. But we are in New York, Dolly! No psychiatrist?

A. "Well yes (laughs), I guess not. But I do that in my songs, I write my feelings out and then I have such a strong faith and then I have such good friends. I am very close to several of my sisters, and we just talk about everything and anything....And my best friend Judy, there is nothing I can't tell her, even if it is the awful-est thing in the world."

Q. You recently had to deny gay rumors. Who is your greatest love?

"My husband is my greatest love, I have been with him 48 years...He is my best buddy."

Q. Why do you think people always wonder about him?

A. "They don't think he really exists! When I was doing my show, we were thinking about having a different guy knock on the door every night, as my husband, and then one night he would be a midget, and one night he would be a black man, and one night he would be like a boxer or a wrestler, all these different things that people imagine what my husband looks like."

Q. You say that looking so artificial works for you, as it lets you prove how real you are. Why all the plastic surgery?

A. "Because I need it. Why does anybody get it?"

Q. Why do you think you need it?

A. "Because I am in show business. I am not a natural beauty. And I am on camera all the time. And I just always see, like if I need - Oh take one of my chins off, at least! - Or whatever. I mean, I don't go to extremes with it. I just do little bits and pieces, just to try and keep things touched up, just tweaking."

Tunisians clash with police over economic woes

TUNIS (Reuters) - At least 200 people were injured as Tunisians demanding jobs and economic development clashed with police on Wednesday, medical sources said, in the latest unrest to hit the country that spawned the Arab Spring uprisings.

Officers fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds who rallied for a second day in Siliana, a city in Tunisia's economically deprived interior on the edge of the Sahara desert, said witnesses.

Tunisia ousted its president Zain al-Abidine Ben Ali last year, setting off a wave of uprisings that toppled rulers in Egypt, Libya and Yemen and inspired the revolt in Syria.

Its new, elected Islamist-led government has since struggled to revive the economy in the face of a decline in trade with the crisis-hit euro zone and disputes between secularists and Salafi Islamists over the future direction of the North African state.

A medic from Siliana Hospital who did not wish to named said more than 200 people had been injured in the clashes.

A journalist from France 24 television told Reuters he and a colleague had been hospitalized for wounds from birdshot apparently fired by riot police.

Many protesters demanded called for the resignation of local officials, saying the authorities had failed to release development funds for their region.

State television said that at least 80 people were injured and that residents blocked the entrances to the city, setting tires alight on roads.

Iyed Dahmani, a politician from the Republican Party in the town, said the national guard - an interior ministry-run security force - had deployed tanks to help restore order.

The protests were the fiercest since hardline Salafi Islamists attacked the U.S. embassy in Tunis in September over an anti-Islam film made in California. That violence left four people dead.

Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali has accused both Salafis and liberal elites of harming Tunisia's economy and image through their conflict with each other. His Ennahda party has tried to present itself as a middle way between liberals and Salafis.

The World Bank on Tuesday approved a $500 million loan to Tunisia to help it recover from the uprising, with another $700 million loan coming from other donors.

The loan, the World Bank's second since the revolution, aims to support Tunisia's economic recovery by providing funds to improve the business and financial sectors and reform social services.

No reasonable fiscal proposal yet from Republicans: Reid

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

Immersion reaches settlement on lawsuit

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Immersion said Tuesday that it has reached a settlement and license agreement with Google Inc. and Motorola Mobility LLC that resolves a patent infringement lawsuit it brought against Motorola.

Immersion's stock surged $1.01, or 21.5 percent, to $5.70 in morning trading. The shares have traded in a 52-week range of $4.15 to $7.50.

Immersion, a provider of touch feedback technology also known as touchsense haptics, said that the lawsuit was based on Motorola's use of haptic effects in its cell phones.

As part of the settlement and license agreement, Immersion Corp. will receive compensation from previous shipments of Motorola devices containing basic haptics technologies. The companies have agreed to a license that covers future shipments of Motorola devices with basic haptics and resolved certain issues related to Google-branded smartphones with basic haptics.

The agreement does not include other manufacturers' handsets that use the Android operating system.

Immersion said that it will dismiss all pending litigation against Motorola as a result of the settlement.

Immersion CEO Victor Viegas said in a statement that the settlement is not expected to have a material impact on its 2012 financial results.

Play Any YouTube Playlist with VLC Media Player for Ad-Free ListeningListening to playlists on YouTube is a great way to check out new music for free, but you have to keep your browser open and you have to watch a bunch of ads. If you'd like a cleaner experience, tech blog Digital Inspiration shows how to play playlists in the VLC media player.

We've shown you how to play individual YouTube videos in VLC before, but that method doesn't work for playlists. For playlists, you'll need the VLC add-on YouTube Video and Playlist Importer installed. Changes to privacy law would cover the cloud

A generation ago, when the Electronic Privacy Communication Act was passed,?"the cloud," a term for massive?server?storage of private?emails, documents and photos, didn't exist. Now some?lawmakers are looking to amend the 1986?law so that information stored in the cloud would require a warrant by the police who want that information from either the cloud?storage provider or the individual.

That amendment to the?Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 2012, the first major changes to 26-year-old law, is expected to be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Right now, law enforcement needs only a subpoena, issued by a prosecutor, to search cloud-based storage, whether it's for emails or documents that are shared for collaboration?on sites like Google. A bill by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, would instead require law enforcement to obtain a search warrant issued by a judge.

"The bill pending at the Senate Judiciary Committee to update the Electronic Communications Privacy Act is long overdue," said Greg?Nojeim, senior counsel and director of the Center for Democracy & Technology's?Project on Freedom, Security & Technology, told NBC News.

"Requiring a warrant for email and other information stored in the cloud would provide privacy to consumers, certainty to law enforcement, and clarity to the companies that receive law enforcement demands."

The ACLU, too, is backing the change. "We believe the statute is very out of date," Christopher Calabrese, ACLU legislative counsel, told NBC News. "All email and all private communications should be covered by a warrant," and not just a subpoena.

Law enforcement groups are opposing the cloud-based?warrant requirement.?The battle comes as courts continue to?wrangle?over whether law enforcement should be allowed to track an?individuals'?cellphone information?without a warrant.?

"The crime scene of the 21st century is filled with electronic records and other digital evidence," wrote?representatives of various investigative, legal and police agencies via the National Sheriffs' Association?in a?letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

If anything, the agency representatives said in the letter, "laws, policies, protocols, and practices related to the process of law enforcement evidence retrieval from communications service?providers are out-of-date and increasingly insufficient moving forward."

Virtual Assistants keep focus on business productivity and growth ...

27 Nov

It?s hard to imagine that in just a few days I?ll reach my two year anniversary with Vicki Shapiro as my virtual assistant. I still remember feeling the pressure to get some help with my growing business but not knowing where to go. I knew I needed someone to help me manage a multiplying amount of details, but I was nervous. This would be the first hiring decision of my new?and fledgling?business.

I wondered:

  • How would I find the right person?
  • Where would I put this person? (I was working in a corner of the bonus room of my house at that time.)
  • What if it didn?t work out?

My accountant assured me I was financially stable enough to make the hire, but this was my first open position. I wanted to get it right. I still remember talking to Bryan Miles about it. (He?s been a good friend, encourager, and wise guy?in the best possible way?for years now.)

I just about dropped by phone when he told me that he and Shannon were starting Miles Advisory Group (which would later expand into eaHELP). It seemed like the answer to all my questions, concerns, and hesitations.

Miles Advisory Group would:

  • Find the right person based on my needs which they assessed and profiled.
  • Provide someone who was college educated, technology-savvy, and had previous experience in a similar role within a corporate or business setting.
  • Coordinate the first few steps to make sure it was a good personality fit.
  • Teach me how to use an assistant. (This was my first time.)

Better than that, a virtual assistant:

  • Eliminated my need to house somebody in a traditional office.
  • Minimized my risk by offering a ?Plan B? if the person wasn?t a good fit.
  • Mitigated my expense by allowing me to start with a small number of hours which I could increase as needed over time.

That was two years ago. Today, I depend on Vicki for mission-critical tasks. She:

I honestly can?t imagine doing business without Vicki. What Miles Advisory Group has done is created a model that not only works but accelerates the speed at which businesses can grow by focusing on productivity. No one pays me or my team to be busy; they pay me to achieve some sort of defined outcome. Bryan and Shannon Miles have applied this type of thinking to staffing and create a dynamite model that works.

If you?re curious about learning more about new models of staff, you?ll definitely want to check out the eBook, 9 Reaons to Rethink Your Approach to Staffing.

What hard decisions do you need to make to create a more productive environment within your workplace? Maybe it?s time to consider a virtual assistant for you or your company.

ECB official presses for Greek aid deal

(AP) ? A top European Central Bank official says he hopes eurozone countries will clear the way Monday for Greece to receive its next aid installment, stressing that a deal will require movement from all involved.

Eurozone finance ministers are trying to reach a deal after failing last week. Athens needs the next batch of rescue loans to avoid bankruptcy, but creditors have differed over how to finance giving it more time to get its house in order.

ECB executive board member Joerg Asmussen was quoted Sunday as telling German daily Bild that a package of measures to plug that financing gap should include "a significant reduction of interest rates on the aid loans and a debt buyback by Greece." But he said it won't include a debt write-off, or "haircut."

Natural Does Not Mean Safe

Ephedra and Birthwort. It took FDA more than 10 years to remove from the market ephedra-containing herbal weight-loss products that had caused hundreds of deaths. Birthwort (right) is another dangerous herbal supplement.

Photographss by Valueline and Istockphoto.

This past October, the office of the inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services issued two reports underscoring the need for improved oversight of the marketing of dietary supplements and improved surveillance of their effects. The reports add to a mounting body of evidence documenting a serious public-health problem.

Use of dietary and herbal supplements has grown dramatically in recent years in the United States. In 2007, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, $14.8 billion was spent on nonvitamin, nonmineral, natural products, such as fish oil, glucosamine, and Echinacea?equivalent to approximately one-third of total out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs. Of that total, $4.4 billion was spent on herbal supplements. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey for 2003 to 2006 indicate that one-half of American adults use dietary supplements and 20 percent use a supplement with at least one botanical ingredient.

Many people think that because herbs are natural, and because they are being marketed and sold legally, they must be safe and effective. Furthermore, surveys of the public indicate that most people believe these products are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In fact, both assumptions are mistaken.?

In 1994, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, with heavy backing from the dietary supplements industry. By defining herbal supplements and botanicals as dietary supplements, DSHEA exempted them from the more rigorous standards used by the FDA in regulating food, drugs, and medical devices?essentially leaving it up to the industry to regulate itself. This single piece of legislation opened the floodgates to a rapid expansion in the sale of dietary supplements.

Between 1994 and 2008, the number of dietary supplement products on the market increased from 4,000 to 75,000. In the first 10 months of 2008, the FDA received nearly 600 reports of serious adverse events (including hospitalization, disability, and death) from these products and 350 reports of moderate or mild adverse events. However, the FDA believes that these reports are drastically underreported and estimates that the annual number of all adverse events is 50,000.

Two highly-respected physician-scientists, Donald Marcus of Baylor College of Medicine and Arthur Grollman of Stony Brook University, have been drawing attention to the dangers of herbal supplements for more than a decade. In a recent article in the Archives of Internal Medicine, they noted, ?Even when the agency [FDA] identifies an unsafe product, it lacks authority to mandate its removal from the market because it must meet the very high legal requirement to demonstrate a ?significant or unreasonable? risk. That is why it took FDA more than 10 years to remove from the market ephedra-containing herbal weight-loss products that had caused hundreds of deaths and thousands of adverse events.?

There Are Holiday Discounts On Real Estate Too - Business Insider

Whether you're shopping for the hottest holiday toys or a new home, this season you're going to find a ton of price cuts.

Most people aren't looking to move during the holidays, but the average home that's on the market during this time will slash its price somewhere between $2,000 to $10,000, according to Graham Wood of AOL Real Estate.

Homebuyer traffic is very low in the winter, so usually only the most serious sellers having their homes for sale during the holidays.

Buying in the off-season can have many benefits for buyers.

To entice buyers further, buyers will throw in extra "gifts" in the light of the holiday season, such as washer, dryers, refrigerators, even sometimes flat screen TV's at no extra coast, real estate agents told AOL.

The competition among buyers is also low during this time, making the bidding process easier. Real Estate agents and mortgage lenders also have a lighter load, so they are more likely to concentrate on you more or process your deals quicker.

China held landmark straw poll to choose top leaders: Xinhua

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's ruling Communist Party has lifted the lid on the opaque backroom selection of the country's top leaders, revealing that it had held a straw poll for the first time in May to decide on the membership of its top decision-making body.

The party, which has held power since 1949, has flirted with what it calls intra-party democracy as it strives to maintain its legitimacy in the face of widespread corruption, growing social unrest and rising inequality, even as the world's second biggest economy bounds ahead.

The party held a meeting of leading cadres in Beijing in May and "democratically recommended" members of the seven-member Politburo Standing Committee and the 25-seat Politburo, state news agency Xinhua said late on Thursday, hours after new line-ups for both councils were unveiled.

Such a poll hardly signals a desire for democratic political reforms, but it suggests that the party is trying to increase accountability and subjecting its members to more checks and balances.

In previous congresses, held once every five years, voters had little choice: the number of candidates was the same as the number of seats in ballots for Politburo and Standing Committee members.

Leadership changes are thrashed out in advance through horse-trading between party elders and retiring leaders anxious to preserve political power and protect family interests. But the changes must also go through a choreographed election process.

Xinhua said the cadres took into consideration the "party spirit" of candidates, jargon for their loyalty to the party.

They also took into account whether the candidates were "just and honest", their abilities and integrity, their age as well as portfolios. Politicians 68 or older are not qualified to join the Standing Committee.

The "democratic recommendation" process involved informal discussions while the views of unspecified people were fully solicited, Xinhua said. It did not elaborate.

Reuters reported last week that outgoing President Hu Jintao and his likely successor, Xi Jinping, were pushing to adopt a more democratic process for choosing the top leadership in a bid to boost its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

Xi replaced Hu as party and military chief on Thursday, only the second time the party has managed a peaceful transition in more than six decades. Xi is likely to succeed Hu as president during the annual session of parliament next March.

BP pays record $ 4.5 bn penalty for Gulf oil spill

(MENAFN - Arab News) British oil company BP Plc pleaded guilty yesterday to criminal charges relating to its 2010 oil spill and agreed to pay an extra 4.5 billion on top of the tens of billions it is already paying out.

BP said it would plead guilty to 11 felony counts of misconduct or neglect relating to the death of 11 workers, one misdemeanor count under the Clean Water Act, one misdemeanor count under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and one felony count of obstruction of Congress.

The company's reputation was ravaged two and a half years ago after an explosion on the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 workers and sent millions of barrels of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico.

The blast on April 20, 2010, sank the rig and unleashed the biggest marine oil spill in the industry's history - and what has widely acknowledged to be the worst US environmental disaster ever.

Earlier this year, BP reached an agreement to settle claims from fishermen and others affected by the disaster for 7.8 billion, but it must be approved by a federal judge and does not affect claims brought by the government.

Over the past two years, BP has so far sold noncore assets totalling more than 35 billion to help fund massive compensation costs arising from the tragedy.

MMA Marketplace: Battle of the UFC 154 walkout shirts

With UFC 154 just days away, it's time to break down the main event in the most important aspect: the walkout shirts. What shirts will Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit wear to the cage and try to sell to you? Let's take a look.

On the left is GSP's shirt by Affliction. You can get it in the black and red that is shown, or in navy and orange if you love the best professional football team in the NFL. On the right, you see Condit's by Headrush. It has swords and stuff.

If these shirts foretell of the kind of fight we're going to see, we're headed for a boring bout that will end in an unsatisfying draw. Buy GSP's here for $53.99, and Condit's here for $35.95.

Daily Commodity Update - 15.11.2012

Energy: At its highs Crude oil touched the down sloping trend line but prices failed closing lower by 1.14%. For 3 weeks now a base has been forming and from here I?m looking for 4-6% appreciation. RBOB finished slightly lower but did close above its 100 day MA. My upside target is about a dime above today?s settlement. Heating oil lost 1% closing just off the lows. We will need to see a close above $3.02 in January to confirm an interim bottom. Buying was rejected in natural gas around the same level the last 2 days as prices lost 1.75% today. Stops should be just under the close and on lower trade tomorrow back to sidelines we go.

Stock Indices: A minor loss in the S&P puts prices at fresh 3 ? month lows but the pace of selling is slowing. As I said yesterday to complete a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement we only need to see about another 15 points. I?m the minority but I?m still anticipating a bounce back near 1425 in December futures in the coming weeks. Another 0.18% loss in the Dow today with a decline of 5.4% in the last 2 weeks.? Like the S&P I think we?re due for a bounce?target in December futures is 13200.

Metals: Gold is down 3 out of the last 4 sessions dropping nearly 1% today as prices approach $1700/ounce. Under that pivot point I see support at $1670 followed by$1640. I will be looking to buy from lower levels but have yet to determine the exact strategy for clients. I do know that I want to be in February contracts but have not decided on what futures or options plays. Silver closed 0.63% lower but pared its losses closing 50 cents off the lows. My target remains $30.75/31 on the impending correction. I am intrigued to be a buyer of March at lower levels. I do not think we can get much more than a mild correction especially if the dollar starts to back off as expected.

Softs: For the last 5 days cocoa price have strengthened just over 6% within $17 of my $2500 objective. It still looks like this leg has some life and though I would not get greedy do not rule out $2575 in March futures. Sugar lost ground today closing under its 9 day MA down just better than 1%. It?s a bit frustrating for my longs as I thought the appreciation was under way. Stay the course as this is viewed as a minor setback for now. My target remains 21 cents in March in the coming weeks. Cotton advanced 1.38% to close at 2 week highs making its way to my 73 cent target. In fact a 61.8% retracement puts prices just under 74 in March. On its highs OJ completed a 50% Fibonacci retracement but I think this trade is just getting started. In 3 short sessions prices gained over 10% but I think we could see further upside. Look at deeper analyses in today?s chart of the day. Coffee closed near its highs on the session 3% off its lows. A close back above $1.56 should shift the momentum from the bears and get longs interested again.

Treasuries:? 30-yr bonds were in the green but barely able to hold onto gains as I think a correction is upon us. My stance is that we will roll over and move back towards the 20 day MA just over 149?00 in the coming weeks. 10-yr notes are also exhibiting topping action unable to hold onto any significant gains in recent dealings. Bearish plays are advised but regular followers know I prefer NOB spreads as opposed to outright short futures in either instrument.

Livestock:?? February live cattle got back most of yesterday?s loss closing higher by 0.19% just above its 9 day MA. If stocks can find their footing I think we can manage to see slight appreciation but do not bet the farm as it has been dicey. The last 2 days feeder cattle have hinted that prices have moved low enough as selling was rejected. From oversold levels it will take prices over the 9 day MA to confirm a low; that level stands at $1.4585 in January. Lean hogs bounced off the 9 day MA but I?m still calling for further deprecation. My target in February pigs is 83 cents.

Grains: Corn stalled today closing lower by 0.62% Prices could go either way so I?ve suggested bearish trades to tighten up stops or move to the sidelines. Soybeans gave up 1.2% closing just above $14/bushel. I think we are within 15-25 cents of an interim low which seems like a fair amount of risk but being I think there is $1 of potential upside the risk/reward dynamic puts long entries on my radar. Today?s loss makes it 5 consecutive days in wheat though the same support that held in mid-October appears supportive. Look for guidance from other Ag markets. I will warn those entertaining longs I just notice a gap from early July that if filled puts futures 3.5% lower.

Currencies:? The dollar index continues to dance just above the 81 level though I expect that to be short lived?forecasting a correction. Aggressive traders can scale into longs in the Euro and Swiss. The Aussie has started to trade lower closing under the 20 day MA for the first time in 3 weeks. As I said yesterday I think December futures can make their way closer to $1.01. In the last 2 days the Yen has lost better than 2% putting prices near 7 month lows. I see little support for another 2% so go with it. This is a perfect example why stops are so critical?see previous posts.

Four dead as train slams into parade float honouring wounded US veterans in Texas

THE eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit the float as it approached a railroad crossing in Midland, West Texas.

FOUR people have been killed and 17 injured after a train crashed into a parade float to honour wounded veterans in West Texas.

Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange said the eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit the float as it approached a railroad crossing in Midland, West Texas.

He said the crossing gate and lights were working at the time.

The ruined float is inspected by police.

Mr Lange did not know if the train crew saw the float approaching.

City of Midland spokesman Ryan Stout says 10 of those injured are in critical condition at Midland Memorial Hospital, while the seven others are in stable condition.

The parade was set to end at a Hunt for Heroes banquet.

A new report on climate negotiations ? Still not ... - Eco-Business

A new report from Stockholm Environment Institute ? Mobilizing Climate Change Action beyond the UNFCCC regarding the on-going negotiation on climate change ?- did not clarify the changes needed to the current negotiation process, which is still too slow and fails to deliver the new entrepreneurs needed from the diplomatic sector and local governments. National governments are not the ones that will bring us a new agreement. Still, there is a growing consensus that climate action outside the UNFCCC need not undermine the climate negotiations, but rather, can complement them. The key is to ensure that all relevant institutions work together in a mutually supportive manner. The UNFCCC should play a central role on two levels ? as the forum for negotiating a global agreement and pushing Parties to increase their ambition, and as a coordinator and catalyst for external actors.

But, it is not enough and the conclusion is to weak.

Summits in?Copenhagen,?Durban and other world cities have been tasked with discussing national governments? ambitions to find global agreements on sustainable development,?Millennium Development Goals and climate change. Despite this, the climate deal is still up in the air and there are no clear signs of a breakthrough. Instead, I see passive national governments that are not engaged enough to bring us closer to any solid agreements.

But at the same time, we?ve seen more cities working together with businesses and their stakeholders to act positively and deliver solutions on sustainable development. It is these initiatives that have been most successful in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and finding?ways to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

It seems fitting that Sweden, a country that has benefited from programmes often based in local areas and cities, should act as an example.?The Swedish now use more bio energy than fossil fuel, so perhaps when discussions start on Monday, the participants will be inspired by the sort of?Swedish initiatives highlighted in the two magazines Sustainable Solutions and Green solutions. It highlights some of the country?s most innovative solutions that have succeeded because they embrace local perspectives and involve all stakeholders.

As often, my question is ?- will local governments will take the lead ahead of?the national government and bring these powerful local solutions from its cities to the negotiating table?

Stockholm-based Kaj Embr?n has been involved with Sustainable Development for more than 30 years. He writes at www.kajembren.com, where this blog was originally published.

Desti: Bay Area Travel Guide for iPad review

Travel is a complicated affair. Once you've sorted time off, airfare, and the like, you're still faced with the harrowing prospective of what to do when you get to wherever you're going. Desti: Bay Area Travel Guide looks to help you along with that last part, provided that you're traveling to California's bay area.

Desti behaves in many ways like both Yelp and Siri. You type in a question or a general idea of what you?re looking for (Napa Valley wine tours, for example) and it provides recommendations in the area.

Unlike Yelp, however, Desti doesn't provide user reviews of the attractions, accommodations, or restaurants. Unlike Siri, Desti doesn't help you find anything other than restaurants, attractions, or accommodations so don't bother asking it where to find a gas station or a nearby hospital.

Siri, it is not

It's hard to fault Desti for its laser-like focus, but I'm going to do it anyway. This app is a great way to plan daytrips and romantic getaways in the bay area, but will be of absolutely zero use to you if you're looking to travel elsewhere.

Additionally, Desti is unduly optimistic of what will happen to you in the course of your travel and does not allow you to add destinations like pharmacies, tire repair centers, or medical clinics to your itineraries.

This severely limits Desti's utility and makes it a poor choice for travel planning with both Yelp and Siri available for iPads. Thankfully, Desti is free so if you're looking for a top-level travel guide for Napa Valley and the surrounding areas you might want to consider bringing it along.

Church leaders plan general election agenda

Christian leaders in New Delhi attended a day-long consultation to formulate an agenda for the next general elections, saying they would work out a draft on common consensus.

?Church should be secular and not communal so that our voices could be heard,? said Samuel Jayakumar, executive secretary of the Commission on Policy, Governance and Public Witness of National Council of Churches in India (NCCI).

The consultation was organized by NCCI yesterday on the theme- Minority Communities and Electoral Politics: Agenda for the next General Election.

Jayakumar said that, ?we should leave behind our differences and come together for the common goal.?

Fr. Dominic D?Abreo, spokesperson of Catholic Bishops? Conference of India (CBCI), stressed that the draft should be accessed by all the religious leaders for better implementation.

He said they plan to exchange ideas and views among the church denominations and come up with a final draft which will be acceptable by all.

Fr D?Abreo said that, ?our demand should be issue based so that it will have more weight.?

T. K. Oommen, a panelist during the event, said that protecting identity, providing dignity and security to all people specially dalits, tribals and under privileged should be in the agenda.

Oommen, who is the former professor of Sociology at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, said ?we should be clear in our stand and make the ruling (Congress) party realize that they can?t take us lightly.?

He suggested that there should be a candidate who can represent the Christian community and whose voices can be heard by the nation.

The church leaders said it is time to bring ?our agenda and share with all the political parties so that it will have a place in their election manifesto.

Christian community can also use this time to pressurize the government to bring some policy changes before election, the meet suggested.

The general elections in the country are due in 2014.

90% Compliance

All Critics (88) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (79) | Rotten (9)

The point of Compliance, which caused walkouts and shouting matches when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is how we are programmed to do things that go against our natural instincts as long as we believe we have the law on our side.

This is one insistent film, more evocative of human behavior than movies that take fewer risks ever could be.

Like a John Hughes movie hijacked by Roman Polanski, this troubling indie effort lays bare the sadomasochism of the American workplace.

Zobel, a second-time feature filmmaker, has put together a skillful, sympathetic but unsparing re-enactment of a small-scale atrocity, and his cast plays it out with natural, understated performances.

Zobel's masterful direction and screenplay heighten the distress of authority figures possessing unseen persuasion over naive employees, exposing a disturbing and haunting look at what some workers are willing to do in order to follow orders.

This is a well-made film, with plausible performances by all the leads, especially Ann Dowd. We feel we know people like this.

I admire the workings of the movie, in the same cool way I might regard a machine gun as a work of art ...

Compliance strips bare the fallacy of equivalent free will. It gets under one's skin in a manner few films do, but sticks in one's head the same way all great ones do.

Without a single bullet in sight, Craig Zobel has crafted an ingenious, dizzying conversation piece of a thriller.

About as far from an easy watch as you could imagine, Compliance is a seedy little story that you'll wind up watching between the cracks in your fingers.

Morally complex look at human behavior leaves you shaking your head in disbelief

Dowd's performance -- showing Sandra's eagerness to please the "cop" and her hesitancy to follow orders -- burns in the mind long after the movie's over.

One of the most deeply disturbing movies of recent vintage.

There's the adage that life is nasty, brutish and short. It's even worse when you're half-naked and locked in a supply room with your boss.

Its skillfully constructed scene-setting montages, its fraught, gliding camera moves and attractive compositions seem judgmental, suggesting the filmmakers are superior to and more sensitive, certainly, than the characters.

'Compliance' takes an extremely unpleasant and nauseating experience for everyone involved and puts this masterful spin on it to make it not only watchable, but a really solid piece of film overall.

There's a humanity here, even for the restaurant manager. But that still doesn't make "Compliance" easy to ingest.

... a sadomasochistic mind-trip ... It has the lingering impact of a gruesome freeway pileup ? you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself.

Compliance will leave you shocked and offended, but it misses out on any opportunity to be anything outside of a dramatization.

Compliance is a difficult film to watch -- walkouts have been reported at more than one screening -- but it's also a calculating and intimate deconstruction of the greater social ills that our fast-food nation faces as a whole.

This psychodrama of ill-advised behavior may well leave you feeling dirty...for what you've watched helplessly and perhaps for what you've countenanced as an American citizen.

So long as you can tolerate the frustration it fosters, it's hard not to appreciate such intelligent provocation.

Perhaps the most disturbing movie of the year. Not a horror film, but given that we can't excuse the behavior as belonging to illegal aliens or felons eluding of the law ... maybe it's a new strain of horror after all.
