Moon Probes' Crash Site Named After Sally Ride

The spot on the lunar surface where NASA intentionally crashed its twin gravity-mapping moon probes today (Dec. 17) has been named after the late Sally Ride, America's first woman in space.

The two Grail probes, known as Ebb and Flow, slammed into a crater rim near the moon's north pole at 5:28 p.m. EST (2228 GMT) today. Their final resting place will bear the name of Sally Ride, who played a key role in Grail's education and outreach efforts, team members announced today.

"The team very much wanted to honor her contributions to education by naming the impact sites after her," Grail mission principal investigator Maria Zuber of MIT said just minutes after the crash, in a live webcast aired by NASA TV.

"We know that NASA has plans for celebrating Sally's accomplishments in many different areas, but her contributions to education in Grail, and more generally to science, techology and math education, are very, very special to our team, so we're very happy to be able to do this for her today," Zuber added. [Sally Ride: 1st American Woman in Space (Pictures)]

Ride had led Grail's MoonKAM project, which allowed schoolkids around the world to select lunar sites for Ebb and Flow to photograph. She died this past July at the age of 61, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ride is most famous for being the first American woman ? and the third woman overall ? to fly in space. She reached orbit in 1983 on the STS-7 mission of the space shuttle Challenger, then flew again on Challenger's STS-41G mission a year later. She spent a total of 343 hours in space.

Ride's sister, the Rev. Bear Ride, was on hand at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. ? which managed the Grail mission ? for Ebb and Flow's last moments. She said the Ride family is excited about the honor.

"We're so grateful to Maria and to the team for continuing this dream and making it such a complete success," Bear Ride said. "It's really cool to know that when you look up now at the moon, there's this little corner of the moon that's named after Sally. And we hope that kids will really be inspired by that as well."

The $496 million Grail mission ? short for Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory ? launched in September 2011. Ebb and Flow arrived at the moon about three months later, then raced around Earth's satellite in tandem, mapping out its gravity field in unprecedented detail. The probes' measurements have allowed scientists to create the best-ever gravity map of any celestial body, Zuber said.

The twin spacecraft were running out of fuel and were bound to impact the moon at some point, so the Grail team brought them down today in a controlled fashion, away from the Apollo program's landing sites and other areas of historical importance on the moon.

Ordinary heart cells become 'biological pacemakers' with injection of a single gene

Ordinary heart cells become 'biological pacemakers' with injection of a single gene

Monday, December 17, 2012

Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute researchers have reprogrammed ordinary heart cells to become exact replicas of highly specialized pacemaker cells by injecting a single gene (Tbx18)?a major step forward in the decade-long search for a biological therapy to correct erratic and failing heartbeats.

The advance will be published in the Jan 8 issue of Nature Biotechnology and also will be available today on the journal's website.

"Although we and others have created primitive biological pacemakers before, this study is the first to show that a single gene can direct the conversion of heart muscle cells to genuine pacemaker cells. The new cells generated electrical impulses spontaneously and were indistinguishable from native pacemaker cells," said Hee Cheol Cho, PhD., a Heart Institute research scientist.

Pacemaker cells generate electrical activity that spreads to other heart cells in an orderly pattern to create rhythmic muscle contractions. If these cells go awry, the heart pumps erratically at best; patients healthy enough to undergo surgery often look to an electronic pacemaker as the only option for survival.

The heartbeat originates in the sinoatrial node (SAN) of the heart's right upper chamber, where pacemaker cells are clustered. Of the heart's 10 billion cells, fewer than 10,000 are pacemaker cells, often referred to as SAN cells. Once reprogrammed by the Tbx18 gene, the newly created pacemaker cells ? "induced SAN cells" or iSAN cells ? had all key features of native pacemakers and maintained their SAN-like characteristics even after the effects of the Tbx18 gene had faded.

But the Cedars-Sinai researchers, employing a virus engineered to carry a single gene (Tbx18) that plays a key role in embryonic pacemaker cell development, directly reprogrammed heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) to specialized pacemaker cells. The new cells took on the distinctive features and function of native pacemaker cells, both in lab cell reprogramming and in guinea pig studies.

Previous efforts to generate new pacemaker cells resulted in heart muscle cells that could beat on their own. Still, the modified cells were closer to ordinary muscle cells than to pacemaker cells. Other approaches employed embryonic stem cells to derive pacemaker cells. But, the risk of contaminating cancerous cells is a persistent hurdle to realizing a therapeutic potential with the embryonic stem cell-based approach. The new work, with astonishing simplicity, creates pacemaker cells that closely resemble the native ones free from the risk of cancer.

For his work on biological pacemaker technology, Cho, the article's last author, recently won the Louis N. and Arnold M. Katz Basic Research Prize, a prestigious young investigator award of the American Heart Association.

"This is the culmination of 10 years of work in our laboratory to build a biological pacemaker as an alternative to electronic pacing devices," said Eduardo Marb?n, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and Mark S. Siegel Family Professor, a pioneer in cardiac stem cell research. A clinical trial of Marb?n's stem cell therapy for heart attack patients recently found the experimental treatment helped damaged hearts regrow healthy muscle.

If subsequent research confirms and supports findings of the pacemaker cell studies, the researchers said they believe therapy might be administered by injecting Tbx18 into a patient's heart or by creating pacemaker cells in the laboratory and transplanting them into the heart. But additional studies of safety and effectiveness must be conducted before human clinical trials could begin.

Pat Barry headlines the weekend?s Three Stars

It was a full weekend of fights on FX. The UFC crowned three new winners in "The Ultimate Fighter" franchise, and in 21 bouts by the UFC, 14 ended in a submission or knockout. That makes choosing the stars a more difficult but still really fun proposition.

No. 1 star -- Pat Barry: Barry is no longer the guy who can't defend anything on the ground. He dealt with Shane del Rosario's submission attempts in the first round to come back for a punishing knockout win. It earned him a $40,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 2 star -- Rustam Khabilov: In his first UFC bout, Khabilov showed that a suplex can be more than just a thrilling way to take down an opponent. Khabilov used it again and again to set Vinc Pinchel up for a knockout.

No. 3 star -- Hector Lombard: The former Bellator champ lost his UFC debut to Tim Boetsch in a way that made Lombard look like he wasn't the heavy-handed star we saw before his UFC days. But the way he stayed out of Rousimar Palhares' leg locks and got the knockout reminded the MMA world that Lombard is pretty good at this MMA game.

Do you agree? Who were your stars from the weekend? Speak up on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments.

Ex-chancellor Schroeder's wife entering German politics

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's wife said she is entering German politics and wants to win a regional state assembly seat next month to fight for pay equality but insisted she has no higher political aspirations.

Coming out of the shadows of her husband, who was chancellor from 1998 to 2005, Doris Schroeder-Koepf told Der Spiegel news magazine that she also wanted to focus on improving the integration of foreigners in her state of Lower Saxony.

"One chancellor in the family is enough," Schroeder-Koepf, 49, said in the interview published on Sunday when asked if U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served as a role model.

The wife of former President Bill Clinton was first elected as a senator from New York state in 2000, just before he left the White House at the end of his second and final term.

"I do know what it means to be chancellor," said Schroeder-Koepf, who was a journalist before marrying Schroeder in 1997.

"From a physical point of view I just couldn't do it. You need to be more robust than I am. These marathon meetings through the night, never getting enough sleep, the trips across so many time zones. I'm just not built for that."

Schroeder-Koepf, a soft-spoken woman who largely avoided the public spotlight until now while raising their children, is a state assembly candidate for the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) in the January 20 election in Lower Saxony.

She said the SPD candidate for state premier, Hanover Mayor Stephan Weil, had asked her to run for a state assembly seat. She also said her husband, 68, was taking over more of the parenting duties now.

Schroeder-Koepf said she wants to fight for gender equality.

"There can't be a pay gap between men and women anymore," she said. "It's absurd that there's a 25 percent pay gap. That must be changed in wage talks and by political leaders. Equal pay for equal work. It's so obvious and needs to happen."

Schroeder-Koepf, who worked for Bild newspaper and Focus magazine before becoming Schroeder's fourth wife, also confirmed a rumor that she advised Schroeder to shorten the title of his economic reform program to "Agenda 2010", a series of measures credited with boosting Germany's competitiveness from 2003.

"I read it in advance, like a lot of his speeches," she said. "It had a very complicated title that went on for a couple of lines, very bureaucratic. I urged Gerd and his team to use a snappier title. It ended up that I had to come up with a title."

An International Tribunal Has Ruled On Whether Or - Business Insider

Wikimedia Commons

The International Tribunal of the Sea in Hamburg has ruled that Ghana must return Argentina's naval vessel, the ARA Libertad, immediately?MercoPress reports.?

The boat has been impounded since October 2nd, when hedge fund manager Paul Singer got a Ghanaian Court to rule that the boat be detained because of Argentina's outstanding debt to him, and a number of other hedge fund managers. A bail was set for $20 million.

As the boat languished in the Port of Tema, Argentina had it out with Singer in a New York Courtroom. The country refuses to pay Singer and other plaintiffs $1.3 billion in outstanding sovereign debt that they bought in 2001, citing the fact that, unlike other bondholders, the plaintiffs did not take the opportunity to restructure their debt in 2005 and 2010.

The majority of bondholders accepted a 70% haircut on their investment, but Singer is holding out because he and his fellows want to be paid in full. That's why he had Argentina's vessel impounded as collateral, and that's why Argentina refers to him, and other holdouts as "vulture" funds.

As that case went to an Appeals Court, there was conflict on the ARA Libertad. At one point the 40-plus sailors on the boat drew their guns when Ghanaian port officials tried to force the them to move the boat to a sleepier part of the port.

Argentina filed suit with the International Tribunal of the Sea to get their vessel back in mid November. The Court said that it would decide on the matter by December 15th, and Judge Shunji Jenai's ruling was firm (from MercoPress):

?Ghana must release with no conditions the frigate, guaranteeing that the vessel, its captain and the crew can leave the port of Tema and ensuring their provision? said the unanimous ruling...

The UN court considered a statement from Argentina that attempts by authorities in Ghana to move the ship ?could lead to an escalation? which could lead to ?incidents which could endanger life? Judge Yanai said.

The court also considered Argentina's claim that the ship could not be maintained correctly during its arrest and that the vessel' safety could so be endangered.

Now there are a few things that need to happen before the boat heads back to Argentina. Both Ghana and Argentina must submit a report on paying their own costs by December 22nd, and the Tribunal will make more decisions about the dispute then.

Meanwhile, the New York Appeals Court will make additional rule on the fight between Argentina and bondholders in February.

Gecko Fruits shipping from South Africa and South America

Gecko Fruits is a new company based in Rungis Market and they will begin sourcing fruits in South America Central America and South Africa with the aim of selling it in France.

Gecko Fruit is a new venture that is the result of a collaboration? between two businesses in France that were already importing fruits into the country. Arnaud Fauchet, owner of Neta, which focuses on exotic fruit, and Richard Frowein, owner of RFW, which concentrates on fruit from the Southern Hemispheres. They decided to combine their efforts to form Gecko Fruits.

?Gecko fruits is really going to focus on seafreight fruits, especially on apples, pears, citrus, grapes, plums, mangoes, pineapples, avocadoes and bananas? said Richard Frowein. He added that, while France is not known as a hot destination among exporters, he thinks that sales of fruits are so good there, a new business is justified. With additional savings on logistics it also promises to make the venture a success.

?We have great synergy between the two companies,? said Frowein. ?Because of that, we'll be able to reduce dramatically our costs on trucking, marketing, warehousing and banking, among other things.?

Gecko? began operating out of their new offices on November 12th, and with six cold rooms and years of expertise between them, Frowein thinks they will do very well.

?We believe we'll satisfy our customers and suppliers? he said.

Bicycle Film Festival-First time in Mexico City (Video)

The Bicycle Film Featival, entering it?s 12th year, has become a world wide sensation not only providing amazing bicycle related films but also uniting local bicycle communities with live music venues, group rides, outdoor block parties and art shows.

In cities like New York, LA, Milano and Paris the festival has reached a happy plateau and comfortably landed in the fabric of local cycling event schedules.

However, in cities like Moscow and Mexico City the festival has been an exposive catalyst, bringing new energy to blossoming bike culture.

This is similar to the way critical mass tells a different story in various cities from mundane running its course (San Francisco) to two thousand strong rides with pro basketball players. (Miami)

THE RESET: Other voices in fiscal cliff debate

FILE -- In this Feb. 11, 2012 fie photo, anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, addresses the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington. For decades, Norquist vowed to drive Republicans out of office if they didn?t pledge to oppose tax increases. Many signed on, but now, several senior Republican lawmakers are breaking ranks, willing to consider raising more money through taxes as part of a deal with Democrats and the White House to avoid a catastrophic budget meltdown. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, file)

They don't have a seat at the talks to defuse a year-end fiscal bomb, yet wield considerable influence.

They are wise-cracking debt-reduction duo Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles; anti-tax activist Grover Norquist and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

Bernanke, one of the first to use the term "fiscal cliff," warns repeatedly of the dire consequences of going over the precipice of across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases in January absent congressional action.

He has used the Fed's money-creation and interest-rate powers to help keep the economy on an even keel but warns there are limits: Congress and the president must step up to the plate.

Norquist has long extracted pledges from lawmakers to never raise any taxes. Some are chafing, but Norquist isn't budging.

President Barack Obama "doesn't have the mandate he thinks he does," Norquist says.

And Norquist is ready to work to drive from office those who violate "The Pledge."

Simpson and Bowles ? chairmen of Obama's now-defunct deficit commission ? have stoked the flames of fiscal reform with frequent public appearances.

Both Obama and House Speaker John Boehner call their proposals clear-eyed models for trimming government debt. But neither has embraced their painful proposals, including big changes to Medicare and Social Security, military cuts, new gasoline taxes and limits on home-mortgage deductions.

Yet Democrat Bowles says this could be the "magic moment" for a deal.

Obama visited a Falls Church, Va., family Thursday to highlight his call for raising taxes on top wage-earners a day after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the administration would "absolutely" go over the cliff absent a deal to raise top tax rates.

Simpson, a retired GOP senator from Wyoming, denounced "threats going back and forth, we're going to do this, we're going to go off the cliff..."

"There's stupidity in that," he told NBC's "Today" show. "What a nuthouse."

Vols hire Cincinnati's Jones as new football coach

Click photo to enlarge

FILE - In this Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 file photo, Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones gestures during the second half of an NCAA college football game against Connecticut at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. Tennessee has hired Jones as its next football coach, the school announced Friday, Dec. 7, 2012.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.?Butch Jones wasn't Tennessee's first choice as its next football coach. The Volunteers believe the former Cincinnati coach will prove he's the right choice.

Tennessee introduced Jones on Friday as its successor to Derek Dooley, who was fired Nov. 18 after going 15-21 in three seasons. Jones becomes the Volunteers' fourth coach in six seasons, ending a tumultuous couple of days for both parties. The new Vols coach said he was taking over "the best college football program in America."

"We'll be working to be champions each and every day," Jones said. "We will be a champion in everything we do. That's not only on the field but off the field."

Jones, 44, has a 50-27 record in six seasons as a head coach. He went 27-13 in three seasons at Central Michigan and was 23-14 at Cincinnati the last three years. He now faces the task of rebuilding a former Southeastern Conference power that has posted three consecutive losing seasons.

Tennessee went after at least two other candidates before hiring Jones.

During the 19-day search to replace Dooley, the Volunteers contacted ESPN analyst and former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden, who indicated he wasn't interested. The Vols then pursued Charlie Strong, who said Thursday he had turned down their offer and would stay at Louisville.

"Rarely in life is anything exactly what it seems to be," Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said. "Life doesn't throw us all fastballs. It throws us curves, and then you've got some screwballs. ... You've got to be able to adjust."

Jones, meanwhile, was apparently waiting for a job like Tennessee.

On the same day Strong made his announcement, Jones rejected an offer to take over Colorado's program. He also had been linked to the Purdue coaching job before withdrawing his name from consideration.

Jones jumped at the Tennessee offer. He called it his dream job and didn't particularly care that he wasn't the Vols' first choice.

"I think I was my wife's third choice, and it's worked for 20 years," Jones said.

Cincinnati athletic director Whit Babcock said Jones told him Thursday morning that he was rejecting Colorado's offer. Mere minutes later, Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart called Babcock to express his interest in contacting Jones. Babcock said he gave Jones 24 hours to make a decision on whether to stay or go, if Tennessee offered. Babcock said Jones notified him of his decision Friday at 5:15 a.m. and informed Cincinnati's players at a 7:30 a.m. team meeting.

"It's been kind of a whirlwind," Jones said.

Jones' hiring means each of the four Southeastern Conference teams that fired coaches this year has filled its vacancy.

Kentucky hired Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops last week to replace Joker Phillips. Arkansas hired Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin on Tuesday to take over for John L. Smith. Auburn selected Arkansas State's Gus Malzahn on Tuesday as the replacement for Gene Chizik.

Jones will be Tennessee's fourth coach in a six-season stretch, not including offensive coordinator Jim Chaney's stint as interim head coach in the 2012 season finale after Dooley's dismissal. Phillip Fulmer was fired after the 2008 season, ending his career with a 152-52 record at Tennessee. Lane Kiffin coached Tennessee in 2009 before leaving for Southern California. Dooley lasted three years.

After winning at least eight games for 16 consecutive seasons from 1989-2004 and posting double-digit wins in nine of those years, Tennessee hasn't earned more than seven victories in any of its last five seasons. The Vols went 5-7 this fall for their fifth losing season over the last eight years. This also is the first time since 1909-11 that Tennessee has finished below .500 three years in a row.

Hart said at the start of the search that head coaching experience was "critically important" and that he wanted a coach who "knows the difficulty of climbing the ladder in the SEC." Jones lacks SEC experience, but he has a career winning percentage of .649. Jones' teams have earned at least a share of a conference title in four of his six seasons as a head coach.

After replacing Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly at Central Michigan and then again at Cincinnati, Jones maintained the momentum his predecessor had established at each school.

In Jones' three-year stint at Central Michigan, the Chippewas won two Mid-American Conference championships and posted a combined league record of 22-3. Jones went 4-8 in his first year at Cincinnati, but the Bearcats are 19-6 since and have tied for first place in the Big East each of the last two seasons. Cincinnati's 2011 season included a 45-23 loss at Tennessee.

Jones signed a contract extension after the 2011 season that includes a $1.4 million buyout if he left before Jan. 1.

He was the third consecutive Cincinnati coach to leave after three seasons. Mark Dantonio went 18-17 from 2005-06 before Michigan State hired him away. Kelly posted a 34-6 record before leaving for Notre Dame at the end of a perfect regular season in 2009.

Cincinnati has made defensive line coach Steve Stripling its interim head coach for the Dec. 27 Belk Bowl against Duke in Charlotte, N.C., while it begins searching for Jones' successor.

"There is no timetable to make the hire," Babcock said. "Making the right hire is better than the quickest hire, but admittedly sooner is better if possible."

Jones' background as an assistant is entirely on offense, but one of his biggest challenges at Tennessee initially will be strengthening a defense that allowed the most points (35.7) and yards (471.4) per game of any SEC team this season. The Vols hadn't allowed that high a scoring average since 1893, when they gave up 42.7 points per game while playing a six-game schedule. They hadn't yielded that many yards per game since at least 1950, the earliest year Tennessee's sports information department has that statistic on file.

The makeup of Jones' first offense at Tennessee also remains uncertain, at least for now.

Starting quarterback Tyler Bray and star wide receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter all are projected as first- or second-round draft picks if they choose to turn pro rather than returning to school for their senior seasons. Junior offensive tackle Ja'Wuan James also has been mentioned as a possible draft candidate.

Americans are living longer, and Republicans are proposing to raise the Medicare eligibility age as part of a deal to reduce the government's huge deficits. But what sounds like a common-sense sacrifice for an aging society that's facing tight budgets could have some surprising consequences, including higher premiums for people on Medicare. (AP) ? President Barack Obama, trying to put a personal touch on "fiscal cliff" negotiations, visited a northern Virginia family's basement apartment Thursday to press his hard line on tax rate increases for the wealthy.

"We're in the midst of the Christmas season," Obama said, sitting at a table in the Santana family's Falls Church home. "I think the American people are counting on this getting solved. The closer it gets to the brink, the more stress there is going to be."

Obama and lawmakers have until the end of the year to avert across-the-board spending cuts and tax increases. The president reiterated the firm stance he has taken in recent days, warning that he's willing to let that economy-rattling double whammy take effect if Republicans don't drop their opposition to higher tax rates for the wealthy.

"Just to be clear, I'm not going to sign any package that somehow prevents the top rate from going up for the folks in the top 2 percent," Obama said. "But I do remain optimistic that we can get something done that is good for families like this one and is good for the American economy."

The president's quick trip ? just a 15 minute drive from the White House ? was part of an effort to rally public support for his tax proposals. The family whose home he visited is one of many that shared their stories online, at the White House's urging, of how they would be hurt if their taxes went up at the end of the year. The president will also travel to Detroit on Monday.

Obama and House Speaker John Boehner spoke on the phone Wednesday, their first known conversation in nearly a week. Neither side provided details of the call, but the White House said the lines of communication with Capitol Hill Republicans were open and there had been multiple conversations between staff.

Unless the president and Republicans reach a deal, George W. Bush-era tax rates will expire on all income earners on Jan. 1. Obama wants to continue them for 98 percent of Americans, while letting them expire on the upper income earners.

If Republicans try to block that effort, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said, the administration will "absolutely" let the country go over the fiscal cliff.

The size of the problem is so large it can't be solved without rates going up," he told CNBC on Wednesday.

Geithner drew a fierce response from Republicans. Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah called his statement "stunning and irresponsible." He added, "Going over the fiscal cliff will put our economy, jobs, people's paychecks and retirement at risk, but that is what the White House wants, according to Secretary Geithner, if they don't get their way."

Economists inside and outside the government warn that failing to reach agreement on taxes and spending could land the economy back in recession.

Beyond his insistence that taxes increase on the wealthy, Obama has also warned Republicans not to inject the threat of a government default into negotiations over the fiscal cliff as a way of extracting concessions on spending cuts.

"It's not a game I will play," he said Wednesday, recalling the brinkmanship of last year in which a budget standoff pushed the Treasury to the edge of a first-ever default.

The White House reaffirmed Thursday that it did not believe the president had the authority through the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling by executive order. Democrats have previously suggested Obama could take that step.

Both sides say they want a compromise, although the administration's hand in bargaining is strengthened by polls showing public support for Obama's position on taxes, as well as by his re-election last month. The president is also working to rally the public to his side and has a trip scheduled to Detroit next week.

In a concession, Republican leaders have agreed to back increased tax revenue. Yet despite defections from within the rank and file, they have so far balked at Obama's demand that rates go up on income over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. They have also called for spending cuts and measures to slow the growth of government benefit programs. Earlier this week, they called for curbing the growth in Social Security cost-of-living increases, as well as delaying Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67, beginning in a decade.

Obama has said he will back spending cuts, including savings in Medicare, as part of a deal that includes the tax proposal that was a key part of his re-election bid.

Once Republicans yield on taxes, he told the Business Roundtable, "We can probably solve this in about a week; it's not that tough."

Republicans argue that they can raise about $800 billion in additional government revenue over a decade by closing loopholes and narrowing tax deductions on the wealthy, rather than raising income tax rates. They argue the rate increase would impose a particularly harmful impact on the economy and job creation at a time when the country is still struggling to recover fully from the deepest recession in decades.

+ New Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy | Dyslexia ...

other topics: use search box

In the ASCD publication Educational Leadership, Sandra Alberti explains the shifts that arrive with the Common Core State Standards.

The English Language Arts and Literacy Standards involve expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening. ?These apply in English language arts as well as in science, social studies, and technical subjects. ?Students must be ready for college and career by the end of high school, so it?s not enough to simply address literacy skills. ?The new standards consider texts to which students must apply these skills.

There are three key shifts in these standards.

1.Building Knowledge Through Content-Rich Nonfiction

Later reading growth and achievement means that students in elementary school need to read content-rich ?nonfiction in history, social studies, science, and the arts. ?They must be grounded in information about the world around them if they are to develop the strong general knowledge and vocabulary they will need to become successful readers.?Nonfiction reading builds students? content knowledge.

Currently, fewer than 10% of elementary English arts texts are nonfiction.

Shifting to building knowledge from content-rich nonfiction does not mean disregarding literature. ?The standards celebrate the role literature plays in building knowledge and creativity. ?Teachers must include rich literature as well as content-rich nonfiction in elementary school.

In later grades, history, social studies, and science teachers will equip students with skills needed to to read and gain information from from content specific ?nonfiction texts. ?Such texts are a powerful vehicle ?for learning content. Students build skills in the careful reading of a variety of texts such as the primary documents in a social studies class or descriptions of scientific observations in a science class.

2. Reading and Writing Grounded in Evidence

The new standards emphasize the use of evidence from texts to present careful analyses, clear information and well-defended claims. ?The standards prioritize questionsing that requires students to read texts with care, rather than asking them to respond to questions that they can only answer from prior knowledge ?or experience. ?Unlike low-level ?search and find? questions, quality text-based questions require close reading and a deep understanding of the text.

The standards also require narrative writing all through the grades. ?Such writing enables students to develop a command of sequence and detail that is essential in later grades, when the emphasis is on argumentative and informative writing. ?This focus, on evidence-based writing and speaking in the service of information and persuasion, is a significant shift. ?Currently, the most popular form of writing in K-12 draws from student experience and opinion; this method alone does not prepare students for the demands of college and career.

3. Regular Practice with Complex Texts and Academic Language

These new standards focus on text complexity. ?The ability to comprehend complex texts is the most significant factor differentiating college-ready from non-college-ready readers. ?The standards include a staircase of assigned texts that increase in complexity.

Text complexity is determined by a number of factors. ?Two of those factors are syntax and vocabulary. ?In order to understand complex materials, students need support in developing the key academic vocabulary common to those texts. ?These are words that commonly appear across genres and content areas essential for understanding most informational text ? words such as ignite, commit, dedicate. ?The shift toward complex text means teachers must provide practice; they must support students through deliberate close reading.

Bioactive small molecules work synergistically, like a drug

A recent University of Colorado Cancer Center review in the journal Advances in Nutrition shows that rice bran offers promising cancer prevention properties. Meanwhile, an ongoing clinical trial is testing the effectiveness of rice bran in preventing the recurrence of colon cancer.

"While I have been trained as a molecular toxicologist, I am excited about the opportunities to deliver bioactive, cancer fighting compounds with food, and this has led to my focus now primarily on the multiple drug-like characteristics of rice bran," says Elizabeth P. Ryan, PhD, CU Cancer Center investigator, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences at the CSU Animal Cancer Center, and the review's senior author. "There's a delicate balance of bioactive components in rice bran that together show anti-cancer activity including the ability to inhibit cell proliferation, alter cell cycle progression and initiate the programmed cell death known as apoptosis in malignant cells," Ryan says.

Ryan and colleagues show that bioactive rice bran derived small molecules include, but are not limited to polyphenolics, ferulic acid, tricin, ?-sitosterol, ?-oryzanol, tocotrienols/tocopherols, and phytic acid.

"We're working now to tease apart the ratios of these active molecules required for bioactivity and mechanisms. Previous attempts to isolate one or another compound have been largely unsuccessful and so it looks now as if rather than any one compound giving rice bran its chemopreventive powers, it's the synergistic activity of multiple components in the whole food that should be studied."

Work with cancer cell lines and animal models shows that the bioactive components of rice bran act not only within cancer cells but around the cells to create conditions in the surrounding tissues that promote the function of healthy cells while inhibiting the function of cancer cells. This tissue microenvironment activity includes mediating chronic inflammation that provides a ripe landscape for cancer. Ryan and colleagues including Tiffany Weir, PhD, and Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, are collaborating to evaluate how rice bran may also help to promote an anti-cancer immune response and modulate gut microbiota metabolism for protection against cancer.

"There are well over 100,000 varieties of rice in the world, many with their own unique mix of bioactive components and so one major challenge is to discover the optimal composition for chemoprevention. Another challenge is ensuring that people consistently receive the required daily intake amount or 'dose' needed to demonstrate these chemo-protective effects. That said, rice is an accessible, low-cost food in most places of the world, and so work with rice bran as a dietary chemopreventive agent has the potential to impact a significant portion of the world's population," Ryan says.

Ryan has taken the next step in the evolution of rice bran from diet to prescription, in the form of an ongoing clinical trial testing its chemopreventive effectiveness in a population of colon cancer survivors.

Samsung courts nepotism again, appoints chief's son Jay Y. Lee to vice chairman

Though Samsung is ostensibly a public company, it has been run more like a fiefdom in terms of leadership, having been founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chull who passed the reins on to current chairman Lee Kun-hee 25 years ago last week. Now, his 44-year-old son, Jay Y. Lee, has been appointed vice chairman, paving the way for another likely family succession to the top of the $195 billion Korean electronics giant. The scion is already the chief operating officer and president of Samsung and the new role will "build on his existing responsibilities and (let him) take a broader role in managing Samsung Electronics' business," according to the company. That may fly in the face of the Korea's political climate right now, according to Reuters, where the country's chaebol's are under pressure to reform amid an ever-widening wealth gap. Though Lee is reported to be lacking in the kind of business star-power that his father exudes, nowadays the job might require more of a keen legal mind than anything else.

Officials: NATO to decide on missiles for Turkey

BRUSSELS (AP) ? NATO foreign ministers are expected to approve Turkey's request for Patriot anti-missile systems to bolster its defense against possible strikes from neighboring Syria, officials said Tuesday.

Ankara, which has been highly supportive of the Syrian opposition to President Bashar Assad's regime, wants the Patriots to defend against possible retaliatory attacks by Syrian missiles carrying chemical warheads. Syria is reported to have an array of artillery rockets, as well as short- and medium-range missiles in its arsenal ? some capable of carrying chemical warheads.

NATO leaders have repeatedly said they would provide any assistance Turkey needs.

The ministers are meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday in Brussels. Germany and the Netherlands are expected to provide several batteries of the latest PAC-3 version of the U.S.-built Patriots air defense systems which is optimized to intercept incoming missiles.

The exact details of the deployment and the number of batteries to be sent will be determined by NATO's military committee based on a report by a joint team that has been studying possible basing sites.

Parliaments in both Germany and the Netherlands must approve the move, which would also involve several hundred soldiers.

German ambassador Martin Erdmann said the decision to deploy would likely be made Tuesday, adding that the Bundestag will probably take up the matter next week.

NATO foreign ministers will also meet with their Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. Russia has criticized the planned deployment of the Patriots saying that it would further inflame tensions in the region.

U.S. officials say the White House and its allies are weighing military options to secure Syria's chemical and biological weapons, after U.S. intelligence reports showed the Syrian regime may be readying those weapons and may be desperate enough to use them.

(AP) ? Weather could complicate the transfer of millions of pounds of explosives that state officials say were haphazardly stored at an industrial site in northwestern Louisiana.

State police spokeswoman Lt. Julie Lewis says if lightning is spotted within five miles of the site, operations will be suspended.

Light rain fell at midday Monday in the vicinity of the site near the town of Doyline (doy LEEN'). No lightning was expected Monday, but thunderstorms were forecast for Tuesday.

Officials estimate that more than half of Doyline's 800 residents heeded state police advice to evacuate in advance of the cleanup that began over the weekend.

State police say roughly 6 million pounds of an explosive artillery propellant was found improperly stored at the Explo Systems Inc. site.

Sharp reveals the LL-S201A 'BIG PAD': a 20-inch multitouch and stylus-friendly display

Sharp's continuing to push out new displays despite its well-documented financial troubles, and today it's got the LL-S201A "BIG PAD" to show us. The 20-inch LED screen supports 10-point multi-touch input, and comes with a stylus which measures 2mm at the tip -- offering greater precision than finger-mimicking nibs of 6mm or more that Sharp says are normally used with capacitive panels. You can stick it on your desk in the standard monitor orientation, but design pros will want to lay it down, although they'll have to be working on a Windows machine (XP and up) as it's not compatible with Cupertino's OS. The 1,920 x 1,080 panel has a 3000:1 contrast ratio and 5ms gray-to-gray response time, and is fed from HDMI- and DisplayPort-ins. It's due to launch in Japan on January 30th 2013 and, if it comes at a good price, could offer some strong competition to its stylus-friendly peers.

Gmail 4.2.1 for Android adds easier resizing, swipe features and more

Gmail 421 for Android adds pinchtozoom, swipe to archivedelete and thumbnail support

That leaked Gmail APK we peeked at a month or so ago turned out to be right on the money. Google has just released version 4.2.1 of the Gmail app for Android, which does indeed add pinch-to-zoom on individual messages and swipe (left or right) to delete or archive. There are a couple of features we didn't see in the initial leak though, which are the ability to "auto-fit" a message to your phone's screen and a new thumbnail view of attached images -- you can then tap a thumbnail for a swipeable gallery. If still pictures aren't your bag, it's finally possible to attach phone-captured videos to an email as well. This version of Gmail is only available for phones with Android 4.0 or higher however, so older devices might be out of luck. If your device qualifies, you can download the new version of Gmail right now from the Google Play store.
