Games captured three of five top honours in the 2013 Toy Guide
Options Consommateurs, Quebec?s much-respected consumer watchdog organization, released its Prot?gez-Vous 2013?Toy Guide late last week ? just in time for those early-bird parents wanting to get a jump on their holiday gift buying.
This is the 29th edition of the annual publication produced by the not-for-profit agency. The 2013 Guide features almost 300 pages of toy and game reviews, as well as articles filled with practical toy-buying advice that first-time moms especially will find helpful.
In preparation for compiling its Guide, the organization relies on over 200 Quebec parents and kids ? ranging in age from infant to preteen ? to take home and test hundreds of play products.
Based on the toy testers? comments, OC rates items using a one-to-six ranking-scale. For example, a product that receives a level-six rating is considered good or a ?recommended? item. To those items deemed excellent and worthy of special mention, the organization awards a coveted Seal of Excellence.
Of the almost 300 toys reviewed in this year?s Guide, 114 products received a recommended rating ? many of them family and strategy-style board and card games. In fact, describing 2012 as a strong year for good quality, fun games, Options Consommateurs went on to award three of its five highest honours to games. This year?s Seal of Excellence winners included: Tactic?s R?pond-moi en images! (distributed by Alary Games), Rio Grande Games? Viva Topo (distributed by Lion Rampant Imports), Flatlined Games? Rumble in the House, Lego Friends City Park Caf? Building Set, and Lego Creators: Roadster vehicle set.
Along with its coverage of products well worth buying, this year?s publication also gives its annual take on several items not deserving of space in the household toy box. Six products received OC?s dreaded ?Trash Bin? designation, including: Joustra?s Reprograf?x Drawing Set, MGA Entertainment?s LalaLoopsy Silly Hair Dolls, Mattel?s Batman-The Bat Launch and Attack Vehicle, Mattel?s Hot Wheels Full Throttle Light Box Set, Hasbro?s BeyBlade Metal Fury Destroyer Dome, and Angry Birds On Thin Ice Activity Game, also from Mattel.
